Shuttle landing path is going over Texas - 11-06-2007, 06:11 PM

The DFW area is in line for a treat on Wednesday. The Space Shuttle is landing tomorrow and its glide path to landing will take it over the DFW area. If you have not seen a shuttle re-entry it is a wonderful site. The bottom is flaming red hot with a vapor trail that will streak across the sky. It is neat. Take your cameras with you. We only have a few years left of the shuttle and it does not glide over land much anymore.

First landing opportunity will be at 12:01PM or noon Central Time. Shuttle should be overhead at about 15-20 minutes before that time. It will track North of us but you still will see it very clearly. Here is a tracking map for this landing opportunity:

The second opportunity is going to be a landing at 1:36PM Central Time. Shuttle should be directly overhead on this approach at about 15-20 minutes before that time. You will see it very clearly directly overhead. Here is a tracking map for this landing opportunity:

To find out when the shuttle will re-enter the atmosphere and what path it will take, monitor the NASA Shuttle Landing Blog about two hours before landing and it will let you know when the landing time will be. Remember the approach overhead will be about 20 minutes BEFORE landing time.

I will post pictures after it passes.

Believe it or not you will be able to see it in Houston. The first pass will be low in the North Sky. The second approach will be clearly visible to you even in Houston. Monitor the blog or NASA TV so you will know when it will land. It will pass overhead about 20 minutes before landing.

I've seen two shuttles go overhead. The first one was really cool, and the second one was a tragedy. I'll be looking tomorrow if the clouds go away.

Go ahead and go. You are driving to a better location for the first pass and not too far away to see the second pass. Just remember to stop and look up at the appropriate time. It only last about 5 - 7 minutes.

I have seen 5 since my first in 1992. And I have not missed one since, except for the tragic one. My timing was messed up that day and I looked up too late by about 10 minutes. Really I am glad it worked out that way. I pray tomorrow will go just fine.

They will probably go with the first opportunity because the weather will be clear. The winds might be a little high. Check the blog starting about 10:00AM. Just watched a little of NASA TV and everything is within tolerances so it will probably be the first pass at about twenty to thirty minutes before landing at 1 minute after noon CST.
