DFW Photojournalism Seminar - REVIEW - 07-17-2005, 05:54 PM

Hi All,

If you were considering coming to this seminar you should have. Leslie gave a complete talk on the work a PJ goes though to get a story, showed some brilliant examples and then the hard part, fielding questions with exceptional honesty (like "How much do you make per image", "How do you get your story published", "Who do you use for [insert word here]", etc...).

She was extremely animated, forthcoming and interesting. The first 2 and a half hours flew by. Make no mistake, she's nuts for sure (grin) with some of the stories that peak her interest but her passion for PJ is unmistakeable.

My one suggestion for next time (hope there is a next time) is to go out on a shoot first thing (or the night before) and have Leslie select and put together the story in class with both her photos and those of the attendees (along with captions).

Also, big thanks to David Bailey for hosting the event at his studio.

Thanks Leslie!!

Joe! Thank you so much for this great review! I was just worried that you didn't have enough time out in the field with me at the event since we got separated. I missed you last night!! We saw a little bit of action, which was great! I really hope everyone got something from the class. I definitely would like to have gotten together for a review session, captioning, and putting together the images for a story. I want to make sure everyone got enough out of the class, so I have no problem if you guys want to get together, for free, and go over that stuff that we didn't get to. It was great seeing and meeting you guys! Thanks, David!!!

Hello all,
Firstly, let me say I had a great time. I'd really like to see everyone's photos, and of course hear everyone's comments.

I've decided to create a '10' best list, as it was mentioned that this is about the max you could really submit for a story. I'd be interested in comments on both the photos (and whether these are actually the 'best' from my larger collection):

As a warning.. there was a wet t-shirt competition, so some of my shots contain what could politely be described as 'wardrobe malfunctions'. (none of those made my 10 best though)

Larger Collection:

I wanted to capture the surface of what I noticed upon arriving... the people and sights. I also wanted to capture the two other largest themes: The obsession with breasts / objectivization of women, and the southern pride / racism as seen in tattoos and jackets.

Anyway, I'm always interested in comments... and seeing everyone's shots.

---Lane

Lane,

All your photos were very good but one stood out as my absolute favorite. Its the biker with the beard sitting on his bike with the field of bikes in the background. Its #5950. Maybe you could post it here for all to see.

Great job!

If you guys haven't checked out Lane's work, let me tell you, you MUST!! Not only did he have 2 great ideas for storytelling at this event (and he didn't have that much time to do so), but he told the stories so well in his work. The photos are brilliant!! I think you are a rising star in the pj world! Great composition, great editing! I just can't say enough. Check them out!

Yeah, I totally agree with Leslie, they are brilliant. You did an awsome job with the techniques Leslie talked about in class and your composition really isolates many of the subjects well.

Great job! You saw the needles in that tatoo'd filled haystack!

Oh yeah, I highly recommend that documentary. It's about James Natchwey. One of the most awesome, brilliant photojournalists of our time.

Thanks Lane. Its next on my queue from Blockbuster. I'll watch it while I'm recovering from knee surgery. I'll probably watch it a dozen times to soak in all the details.

Porta-Guards - 07-18-2005, 12:09 AM

Lane, loved them all, but my favorite is the two women guarding the Porta-Potties. You've got to post that one too!

Heh.. ok here it is:

I'm really glad I saw these ladies, their facial expressions and physical forms really complimented each other. It was at this time I really wished I had the 70-200 VR.. because I knew if I went up to them they'd change. In the end, I did the next best thing... the old 'casually walking by, looking the other direction' while snapping a couple of shots in their direction. :) I still didn't have the reach, so I had to crop down, but I guess it still works.

James Nachtwey - War Photographer - 07-20-2005, 08:56 PM

Lane and Leslie, just finished watching the documentary War Photographer. Wow, it was incredible – thanks for recommending this fascinating film on the photography of James Nachtwey!

There are many remarkable aspects of this documentary that I won’t go into here, but one unusual side note is that after this was filmed (2001) is that he lived not far from the World Trade Center. There are a couple of scenes in the movie showing him arriving and leaving for trips with the Brooklyn Bridge in the background. The link below describes how by chance he wasn’t out on assignment during 9/11, but witnessed and photographed much of it:

http://www.digitaljournalist.org/iss...twey_intro.htm

Thanks again, Kevin
