They say a permit is needed ($50), but I've never had one or been asked/confronted about it. If you go near the Mustangs though, I hear security is on you pretty quickly. But the canals, your only problem is finding room with all of the other photogs there.

I've shot both places without going through (what I now understand to be) the proper channels. There's a photog's office there at the canals, but it's always been locked when I'm there. He has signs posted that basically say to not to shoot on his building. If he was there, and in a bad mood, he might come out and question you, but the place is always deserted when I shoot there.

They do require a permit its $50 and do check. go to dcurd.com I think and it will tell lyou all about what you need to do. They just recently started charging becasue of some problems and I've been told they are stepping up the policy of checking to see if you have a permit or not. I've been checked once since they started it.

And since the permit stuff started its not as crowded which is nice.

The studio down there is Sallee ( a husband and wife team). I have seen them down there many time and they seem to be wonderful people. I am sure those signs are there for the photogs who have no common courtesy. Dont shoot on their steps or linger around the bulding too much.. and I dont think you should have any problems.
What I would give to have that studio location!!! man =)

I concur with this. The Sallees were shooting a family down on the canal while I was there and they were very nice. It was a learning experience just to watch them work. But the fees and restrictions have nothing to do with them with the exception of them requesting that you don't use their building as your backdrop.

Is their photography office building that good looking that they've had a problem? Who would wanna shoot a photographers offices/studio building as a backdrop?

Well my camera is equipped with a 1000 megasquirtle light sensitive array with a megakilo double widget interface and a pseudo-terrafilter. its got 2 million hexafurtles with a 10 kiloplex and a rechargeable virtual combo-backplate. i also fitted an optical fillyfangle with predictive threshold histogram monitoring. it also has a light sensitive light meter and a time sensitive shutter mechanism.

I did a quick run-through of some of my Las Colinas photos and found this image that shows part of that photographer's office building (on the left side of the frame). Now maybe you can see why people occasionally use it as a backdrop!
