Great shots, Joe.. especially that first one.. sweet, sweet sky.

HGTV had a DFW house (forget where) on their "What's With That Decked Out Christmas House?" special this year... the house was entirely lit with LEDs.. and had music, light show, all of it... and she said the total bill for the MONTH was only $100 more than her November bill.

Nice! I like the glow your shots have, it really does look like that.

It's quite a sight when you first come upon it don't you think?

Thanks. Yes, it's quite a site. Someone said it looks like it's something out of a storybook, and it does.

That's amazing. All the way up to the tips of the branches. I'll bet that wasn't cheap to have done. We'll have to swing by and check that out.

Thanks for posting, Joe and Albert.

LED Tree - 12-14-2007, 11:49 PM

ok, it's a kinda cool, wet, rainy, misty kind of night and I'm using my monopod instead of a tripod (idiot!) to shoot this tree. my 11 year old son is a real trooper, but he's ready for some hot cocoa on a night like this and here's what I came up with.

Joe - thanks for the heads up, the tree is beautiful, your sunset shot with the tree is just amazing. The street it's on is McMakin from FM407 amd Shiloh from FM1171 if anyone else wants yo go.....

Albert - mine had some glow tonight like yours, I guess because of the mist.

When I talked to the owner they said the absolute best time to photograph the tree is right before sunup. I haven't tried it yet due to the weather but when it clears up a bit I'll take a stab at it.

Before sunup? The street next to the tree lies north and the other west - what angle might you use? I guess down the street by the house? I didn't go on the owners property tonight......

If anyone is interested- a "superbrite" LED uses about 30mA current or 100mW of power. mW = milliwatt or 1/1000th of a watt. The entire tree, with no other losses assumed (not possible), consumes about 40 watts of power with 40,000 LED's on it. It must take a pretty stout DC power supply to power it but all things considered that's pretty impressive.

Nice shots Joe

That would be 4000 watts.

100mW*40000=4000 watts.

Now I see why such a tree better be LEDs!

Also, DC is not required. I have some sets of LED Christmas lights and they use AC... you could see them flicker a bit because of it.

Now I know that my brain is fried (forgot to do the /10 thing) It's been a rough 3 months 4kW is quite a bit of power. As much as I hate to tackle another simple math problem... 4 kW x 24 hours = 96 kWH or about 1.5 days of my normal home electrical usage. Not too shabby...
