Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base - First Timer... - 02-29-2008, 10:21 PM

So I finally got a chance to go out to the FW JRB and met up with Captain Tom and KeithnFW (who posts those spectacular photos of military planes taking off/landing).

It's a very cool experience if you haven't been made that much better by the overwhelming knowledge of Tom and Keith. Tom was playing Houdini predicting the way the aircraft would turn (and was right within fractions of a second). Keith knows everything about everything that's going on out there. They made the day worth the trip.

Anyway, there wasn't much going on today. Most people were waiting for the P38 to take off (see KeithnFW's thread).

Here's what I came home with:

I'll be going out again soon. It's amazing to have this kind of access to these kinds of aircraft (and not be at an airshow).

As always Joe your photos are impeccable. The last one is a gem. I love the capture of the anti collision light.

This is a Lockheed owned aircraft that their test pilots use to get back and forth from their home base to wherever they need to go. Kind of like a company car only a bit faster.
The two white tanks under the wings are "travel pods". They put their personal affects in there while travelling. Some people have cooler jobs than I do .......

p.s. thirteen years as an air traffic controller helps me to know what is happening.

At one time in my life (maybe 2 years) I worked on jet aircraft, not these but way back when the Navy was flying F8's and A7's. I still know very little compared to Tom or Keith. Love that last shot Joe. It's a dandy!

Great stuff Joe! I wish it had been a little busier than it was Friday. It was a little slower than normal. Hope to see you out there again soon.

As always, great captures, Joe. To me, the one that truly stands out is the 2nd image. The composition and colors take it above and beyond being just another airplane shot. Your knack, Joe, is that you have a way of making the ordinary look extraordinary.

How are Saturdays out there? I want to go out and shoot some, but I'm not sure how the weekends are. Is there any action going on out there?

Weekdays are best. They fly on Saturdays but it's a bit slower.

I love how you put a remote strobe on the top of that last jet.

Thanks all! Compared to Keith and Tom I have a long way to go but I do appreciate the very kind comments (especially Jakes). I highly recommend spending an hour or two out there.

That's my personal favorite and I have a dozen similar to that one. The clouds were just too cool to ignore.
