Lighting Demo/Class information - 08-11-2005, 09:04 AM

Since I don't have all the attendee's email addresses, I'm going to post this information here and make it sticky so everyone can find it.

I'm all set for the Demo on Saturday. I've confirmed with Christy the model and David the Studio owner and we are set for a 10:00AM start time. If you want to have a bite to eat (I'm bringing bagels and Starbucks coffee) please try to get there 5 or 10 minutes early. We have a lot of information to cover and I'd like to get going on time. You can always munch while I talk, or sleep, whichever you choose...

I created an outline that you can download to see what I'm going to talk about. It's at http://www.polodigital.net/Lighting/...emoOutline.pdf
If you would please take a look at the basic terms I listed in 2a. If you are familiar with shooting in full manual mode, these won't be a surprise. If you haven't, don't worry. I'll either go over it quickly or skip it depending on everyone knowledge level. We will be shooting in full manual mode, so please take some time to learn how to set your camera up in this mode. I can help any Nikon users, but if you shoot a different brand, you'll have to set it up yourself. The settings I typically use are ISO 200, aperture f/8, shutter 1/250. If your body won't sync that fast it's OK, you can shoot anywhere from 1/60 to your max sync speed. If that went over your head, I'll talk about that in class also.

What to bring:
  • camera body (dslr preferred, but we'll see what we can do with P&S units)
  • charged batteries (I always carry one spare even though I've never used it)
  • mid-range zoom and/or short telephoto lens (I use 50mm, 24-85mm, and 70-200mm)
  • flash memory (count on between 60 and 80 shots, I shoot raw, but jpeg is OK too)
  • some way to sync to the strobes (if your body has a hot shoe or PC port, you're ready, we will use my radio remote or a PC sync cord)
  • a chair to sit on
  • a sense of humor (to laugh at me!!!)
    Optional
  • a light meter (the lights will be set, but if you have any questions, bring it!)
  • a tripod (if you want to try a headshot with a longer telephoto lens)

For those of you who haven't been to David's studio, it is a little 'challenging' to find the first time. Although the address is on Justin Rd., it's actually in a business park that's a bit off the main road. You need to watch for the gas station/mini mart on the south side of the road. Turn into the station and follow the driveway west all the way to the end. I know I missed it the first time. My cell phone # is 972-849-8656 if you get lost.

If you have been confirmed and for some reason cannot attend, please PM or email me ASAP. I have at least 5 or 6 others who would like to come and I'm counting on having a full class so I can pay David and Christy and still have something left over to donate to TPF.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and I hope you all get something out of the demo.

Looks like you have all the bases covered! Worth way more than the $30 price of admission for sure.

Is that convenience store the really old looking one? Next to some big plot of land? I -think- I know what you're talking about, but maybe the one I'm thinking of is further down west.

It's a FINA Gas Station.

I think you're right. There is a horse farm just east of the station.

That is correct. Its behind the FINA gas station/Caps Market, next to (just east of) a big open field with cows in it (usually).

I will be in Crawford tomorrow so sorry I'll miss you guys, but I know Scott is going to rock it! Have a great time and make yourselves at home (and come back).

David
