Hey Scott - 08-15-2005, 11:42 AM

I don't have any tips on barns for you but....... I wanted you to know that I went to your site and looked at your photos. WOW!

You are very talented! I have your site book marked and will refer back to it any time that I get ready to go out and shoot landscapes. I shoot sports on the side, lanscapes just when I get a chance to travel or a spare minute, but your work is amazing.

Your site will be a reference for me any time I need a little inspiration. If you ever find any barns in the DFW area and don't mind someone tagging along I would love to watch you work. If you prefer to work alone I totally understand but make sure to post what you get here so I can see what you get.

Thanks, Kevin

Scott, there are a couple in Murphy across from South Fork on the west side, Murphy Rd. and Parker Rd. area. Another is at Parker and Jupiter off the north east corner. Another is down from the nature preserve across from CCCC at Spring Creek and Jupiter. You’ll have to get the usual permission but these are some I have wanted to stop by and shoot myself.

kevin...
thanks for the kind words. the site is sorta a thorn in my foot now - i have about 9 months of images to add, some 25 new shots from arizona, utah, colorado, and north carolina. seems like updating the site with new work always get prioritized behind everything else! i never mind company while shooting... but i hope your patient - shooting with a view camera can be very time consuming!

alfred...
SF ranch is a stones-throw from my house... i'll have to go and check out those spots! thanks so much for the tips - i had no idea there were barns out there.

Shoot me an email if you find a good barn to shoot. I'll pack my digital slr if you don't mind and I can help you carry gear if you need me to.

I would really like to see how you decide what to shoot, from what angles, etc. I promise to stay out of the way. ;)

Thanks,

mmm, seems like i didn't really give a complete answer on the lens. for anyone interested...

it's a 14" lens, which gives a field of view on my 4x5 camera that closely approximates a 120mm lens in 35mm-speak. it's a dagor, which is a lens design that's been around over 100 years. this particular lens is one of the last iterations of it, and of the only run that was ever multi-coated. schneider bought goerz in the 80's and commissioned the swiss lensmaker kern to make these last dagor lenses in three batches - that last of which was multi-coated. dagors are renowned for their smoothness and wonderful rendering of fine detail. they are not super-contrasty like most modern lenses, but rather yield a creamy smoothness to an image - especially nice with black and white film.

There is a very nice collections of barns and older structures in the Red Oak and Ovilla area. Also at Joe Pool lake there is the Penn Farm which has several old structures, barns, and farm equipment.

I have a bunch of shots I took there but haven't had a chance to process them yet.

Scott, they were there last year when I was driving school busses for PISD. If you turn west on the Gregory, which is right across from SF, then turn right on Gary there will be the one on the left that I all ways wanted to catch during a snowfall there. There is one you can see from Murphy Rd. that even has an old tractor in front of it. That whole area is building so they may have been knocked down.

kevin... where were you last week whil i was making my way up another of colorado's majestic 14ners with a 70 pound pack! it's good of you to offer, but i've got things pretty well streamlined these days. if i can manage to wrap things up here today, i'll go check out some of the barns to see what time of day would be best to return. if there's some good shooting to be had, i'll let you know.

jim... again, thanks for the inputs.

alfred... with as rapidly as this area is developing, there's a very good chance those wonderful old structures are long gone. only one way to know for sure...

thanks, all,
scott
