More Info on the Canals at las Colinas - 05-13-2008, 09:56 PM

After reading the previous closed thread about shooting at the canals without a permit, I thought the following was appropriate information that could be helpful to those of you thinking of working in the area.

I'm in the process of working up an outdoor workshop for the canal area later this year. DCURD not only requires a $200 permit for a full day but also requires proof of business liability insurance to conduct an event of the size I'm thinking about (10 - 12 people). This permit does not include the use of the area at Williamson Square (the Mustangs), only the canal area. One additional note - there are no public restrooms available in the canal area (although I have worked out an arrangement with a local business in the area).

Just another reason they don't like people swimming in the canals. Ewwwww.

The Mustangs are owned by the Williamson Square folks and are not under the authority of DCURD, I believe... you have to get permission from the security office in those buildings to do anything other than snapshots there. (Including tripod photography for long exposures.)

The didn't use to charge unless you were doing a high impact shoot.. but that may have changed.

According to DCURD you should contact Williamson Square Management Co.

'DCURD' is the Dallas County Utility and Reclamation District. Their main job is to control the water and related infrastructure around the canals and lakes of Las Colinas. DCURD was actually created by an act of the Texas State Legislature. I once read that they were able to keep the water levels within plus or minus 1 foot through all kinds of dry or wet whether. Their web site: http://www.dcurd.com/
Included on their web site is information about the much discussed property use permits!!

Thanks.

Their web site looks 10 years old, and the webmaster email address is no good.

More like 15 years old...

At least it doesn't play some horrible MIDI file on a loop...
