Trendy Cams - 05-22-2008, 09:55 PM

My family and I recently went to Sea World in San Antonio this past weekend, and it seems like 90% of all people who had DSLR's had Nikons. Everywhere I looked there were black and yellow straps. I just found it a bit odd because it seemed like just yesterday everyone had Canons.

Anyone seeing the same thing?

Or am I not cool anymore with my 400D?

Nikon has had a huge advertising program over the past year.

Yep, Nikon has really stepped up their marketing over the past year. Ads everywhere, and not just photography magazines either. Their campaign was also based on how if you give an average person one of their cameras, they can take amazing photos (one of the big programs they did was where they gave each family in a small town a D40 and showed off their best couple of shots saying "anyone can do it"). Not necessarily the technical aspect.

Having any kind of camera is a plus. And photo opps abound at SW.

But I figured people took their Nikons to SeaWorld because it wouldn't be such a great loss if Shamu ate them. Just kidding!!!

Nikon took a Major hit on the Semiconductor Equipment sector and were deep in write offs
the first part of the decade.
This also effected their photo equipment.
Semiconductor used to account for 80% of their revenue back in 80's and 90's with only 10 % from photo.
In late 80's they outsouced all non semiconductor equipment.
The turned profitable a few years ago and now are pushing photo again.
But it will be Sony that overtakes #1.

That explains why many Nikon DSLR's use Sony chips. I didn't know the history behind that - thanks!

I was also surprised to see that of all of the DSLR's that Nikon makes, only the D3 has a sensor made by Nikon.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I never put two and two together... Nikon has had a recent advertising blitz lately.

It's very interesting how marketing influences people. Don't get me wrong, Nikon makes excellent cameras, but all it takes is the Picture Town, USA commercial to tell people how their cameras are "the best". And then most people think when they see that, "Oh wow! All these regular folk just like me can take amazing pictures; all I need is a Nikon!" when they fail to realize any of those pictures can be taken with any other brand of DSLR.

I'd rather be a warrior carrying the big Canon.
