Dang! I didn't even know this was going on!

These are great shots! I'm guessing you shot from the shore somewhere, and not on a boat?

If anyone ever wants to come get some shots like this:

I'm always looking to fill spots on my boat for more weight. But yeah, we suck. :P

Great work! Looks like a lot of fun to shoot.

#7 is a sure winner! Great grab on that one.

Yep, I were not lucky like Andrew to stay on the boat:-) Shooting from deck is not much better than from shore.

I wouldn't call it luck, HOT, CRAMPED, and DRAINING is more like it. I did it a few years back.

Well, it is as hot on shore also but dryer. On boat the action follows you:-)

E X A C T L Y...

I had the opportunity, but declined to actually do the boat. Shot all from the shoreline. Though, I probably will the next time if I have the opportunity again.

These pics are very good! Looks like you got some of the Pro Women too... I left just prior to them starting... I had planned to be there all day...but my phone rang and I couldn't hear...SO... I went to car where it was quiet (and COOL)... After that, I just couldn't bring myself to go back out there in the heat. 6 hrs was about all I could take that day. LOL

Thanks for sharing these. I like em!

My biggest critique is that there needs to be faces in more of them. The majority of the time that is what makes or breaks the photo. And as fas as your focusing problem, go in the boat and flip it on manual, the riders distance from you is not going to change.

BTW: On the focusing... Even though I shot with the MKIII, I had some issues with focusing as well. For me, this was one of the most challenging fast moving, background distracting, water spray, changing focal length, harsh light events I have ever attempted.

It took me awhile to get the hang of what worked the best. What I ended up doing, was AI-SERVO (back button engaged), I would lock the subject as they were coming, let off, burst several frames, then relock/track the subject, release and burst... I found that this gave me the most keepers.

Holding down AI-SERVO throughout the heat/pass was too difficult with all the various elements facing me (including various flags, jumps, PEOPLE, etc)... I probably spent an hour fiddling with various techniques until I found what worked the best.

Wei,

Did you happen to be in the tower shooting at all?

Someone that I thought might be you yelled down at me to get someone's attention under the tent. Just curious if it might have been you...

No, wasn't me on the tower. I stood at shoreline close to the deck most of the time. I got there at 1:30pm and left around 4pm, it was so hot. I don't think I could stay there any longer.

I also use back button and Servo to track, 70% of the frames had to be thrown away. Even the ones I kept were not tack sharp. I have never shot 1d3 before, have been on the edge to get one once Canon really fixed AF problems.

I did get some faces. But actions were not good. Really wish I could get on the boat to shoot some:-)
