Suggestion Needed - 06-09-2008, 09:18 PM

Okay, so I'm still new and learning, but I am trying to finish the NYIP course, if nothing else to be able to say that I have finished something. Most of the photos I have left to take are portraits, and my wife is not a willing model, which poses a problem (pardon the pun). I've looked at model mayhem, but being new, I don't really know what to look for and most of them on there seem to be marketing themselves more towards the bikini/glamor photos, which I'm not looking for. Just some simple portrait shots with someone who knows what they are doing (and could give me a few pointers)

So, I'm in the flower mound area, where do I look or call to fine a model that I can hire (reasonable rates) and or trade with for an afternoon sometime so I can finish this thing? I have until October (3 years goes by pretty quick).

Thanks,

You have a neighbor or friend? Surely you have one or the other if not both!

teenage girls love to have their photos taken...have more than one with you though...you don't want to be known as the dirty 'ol man!!! Take their photos for practice, and then give them a copy. My daughter and her friends are always willing participants.

I gots no friends. :(

Seriously though, I was actually hoping to find someone with a little experiance that may actually help me along the way as well. I'm not above/below/whatever paying for their time. NYIP has a lot of good info, but I could use some good one-on-one with either a model that knows what they are doing or a photographyer/model.

And I fully understand about the teenage girls. That's part of why I'm reluctant about asking any since I don't know any that well. Too many news stories lately. I'm have afraid to even take my camera to a park where kids are playing the way things are these days. And wether it be model or teenager, my wife will be present as well. No one-on-one.

Or, maybe I'm just being hyper-sensative to the whole business and over-reacting??

You are taking portraits right? Who says that it has to be female, or that she has to be young? Besides your wife, what other relatives are handy, Father, Mother, siblings, Aunt Uncle, cousins? How about the person that you see every day at the gas station or the convenience store? Just tell them what you are doing (taking photos for a class), and that you need a subject. People are all around us.

You could advertise on Craigslist, but I'm what you get probably won't be as good as just finding someone you know (church? grocery store? real estate office?).

Robin and Marc, both TPF members, host a model place called One Talent Source that you could try. There's a lot of young models willing to do TFP/TFCD to build their portfolio.

What is tfp/tfcd? Time for photos or cd comes to mind but not sure.

To the original question, you wouldn't get the input from them you want but you could probably get a safe group of volunteers by offering your shots to a local sports team. There'd be plenty of subjects and enough folks around to avoid any possibility of impropriety.

I see your point of wanting them to guide and advise you but there's also something to be said for the school of hard knocks as well which the total amateurs would provide. Good luck.

You are absolutly right, it doesn't have to be female. Guess that sexism is creeping into my mind. When I think model, I think female. Good point. Relatives are all up in Oklahoma and always seem to have better things to do that "git their pictur took". :) I'm really not trying to be difficult, but that's what I'm getting from family.

I'm also located in Flower Mound and have access to a lot of models who could use good low cost or free headshots ... and as a bonus, I can offer a you lot of photographic advice ... if you want ... but you'll have to overlook the fact that I'm "... one of those glamour photographers."

Sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like that. :) Sounds like a great opportunity. We'll have to get in touch.

Attend a workshop. Find one that has something to do with posing, studio lighting, etc. and you'll probably come away with what you want. Brad Barton often has these kinds of events (his studio is in Grand Prairie) so you may want to check with him.

Here's one you can check out: http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=72398

Just a thought.
