Hey guys:
Anyone have a recommendation for formal photography classes or training near the Flower Mound area? I don't have much time to drive out too far from there, so I'd like to keep it close if possible. My work schedule and location doesn't allot much time for travel. I'm starting to dread being in the IT industry, and despite the money, I would like to start getting a little more serious about my favorite hobby.
Thanks a bundle,

I'm going to try and have about 1 class per month at my studio in Flower Mound, what type of classes are you looking for? We've had the lighting class and a photojournalism class.
I'm thinking of opening up a basics class to the public and then have some more specific classes with different instructors for amateur and pro photographers.
Let me know the interest and types of classes that everyone wants.

I took the lighting class at your studio the other weekend... that was pretty fun, and I would love to attend a more advanced one in the future. I understand some really fundamental things about photography, but I think my knowledge is still a bit patchy, so I'm also looking for a good basics class, just to make sure there's not anything basic I don't already know. Composition, working with models, and PP or PS class would be great. The PJ class sounds really neat... I'd probably be interested next time there is one. I don't think I currently have enough time to pursue a whole degree in photography, so that's why I'm looking for training anywhere I can get it.. the more I know the better. :) I imagine you will be able to generate quite a bit of interest opening your studio up for more classes. Thanks for the reply :)

I would be interested in some post processing, photoshop sessions. There are others around, but they also want to get into graphic design aspects, which I am not up for yet.

Rozzie,
You might check into North Central Texas College (NCTC) Corinth campus. I think they have a basics of photography offered in their 'adult learning' program.
UNT in Denton has some too, if that's not too far to drive.

Hey David - Put me on your mailing list for when you start setting up those classes. Mostly I would be interested in ANYTHING to do with portraiture, though others are fun. Maybe we should ask what people would be comfortable teaching or something?? -EK

Let me know the interest and types of classes that everyone wants. | If it's not obvious, I'd love to help in any way. If you want a guest instructor, I'm game. I'm getting ready to announce another lighting class for late September since there were so many that were on the waiting list from the first one.

Howdy Rosalyn,
I am not sure if these would be too basic for you but Karen and I are going to attend these 3 Free Classes being put on by Hope Camera Club. We are members there and have always been delighted with anything they have offered.
Here is the link to their website: http://www.hopechurch.com/cameraclub/index.shtml
Also, we attended one of Steve Kozaks Lighting Seminars and would love to take some more of his classes or workshops. We were both very impressed with his skill level and teaching techniques, if only we could get him to move out to Burleson
Here's his website: http://www.stevekozak.com/index

Take care,

It's all cool to me as long as I can fit it into my schedule and vicinity, and there isn't a film requirement ;) Actually, it looks a lot like something I'd be VERY interested in. Thanks so much for mentioning it... I'll have to check it out! Quote: |

HAL UNGAR PHOTOGRAPHY. 1323 E LEVEE ST, DALLAS, TX 75207. (214) 761-0551.
Hal does classes sometimes. Hal was an assistant to Yousef Karsh. Hal's basic lighting class revolves around one/two lights. He teaches the basics like Rembrant, butterfly and shadow ratios.
Karsh shot mostly with fresnal focusing spots and while Hal doesn't teach fresnals (that I know of) but he does teach very solid, classic, studio portraiture lighting principles using softboxes. The same principles can be applied to fresnals should you want more control.

You have NO idea how that is EXACTLY something I've been looking for. I've always wanted to attempt it all myself w/ no training, but I had no idea there was someone out there teaching it in Dallas. I need to get my hands on some fresnels... that's for sure.

I have two sets of Fresnals. I shoot them for more art/higher end stuff. I can explain if you like but prolly not suited for this thread. PM me and we'll take it offline.
I did both these with that type of light. Hope I don't get banned for this? :)

Oh and before I get the axe, Check out George Hurrell's work too. Mostly foucing spots.
If you like that kind of look you might want to look for this book:
Hollywood Portraits and how to take them by Roger Hicks Christopher Nisperos isbn# 0-8174-4020-b. Mostly fresnals and some very cool stuff in there.
