I know there are plenty of cemeteries in and near Fort Worth but what about older ones with plenty of pre-20th century grave sites both above ground and in ground etc.

The Parker Cemetery is in Hurst. Not very big but rather old. The Grapevine Cemetery has a section that's older. Oakwood in Ft. Worth came to mind first but someone's already mentioned that. It's great. I also know of three old (headstones dating back to late 1800s in Lewisville. Not easy to find but I did. All three are currently active so they have some newer headstones but mostly older. Oh, and there's also the Minter's Chapel Cemetery in Grapevine. It's actually within the boundries of DFW Airport but it's accessible from West Airfield Drive. Some really neat old headstones there. If ya want a really fun daytrip, head west to Thurber, Texas. Stop in at the Smokestack Restaurant and ask for the keys to Cemetery Hill. All old grave art there except for the newer historical marker at the front.

Let me know if you need directions of any help finding any of these.

Mt. Gilead Cemetery in Keller has pre-Civil War graves. Easiest way to tell you is to go north on U.S. 377 and turn right at Mt. Gilead Road and follow it around until you get to a massive curve and it's on the left. You might also be able to map it.

Very interesting stuff, with iron work on some of the markers.

While you're roaming around Oakwood you can try to locate Lee Harvey Oswalds grave ......

Edit: Holy crap Batman... I've been at the wrong cemetary. No wonder I could never find it......

Tom, unless that grave was moved Colyn will be looking for a long time. Lee Harvey Oswald was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery

Oakwood is a good one for notable people though. I need to go back there one day. Lots to see and you can get downtown Fort Worth in the backdrop of some shots.

Keys? Last time I was up there, the gate was more of a suggestion than a barrier.

Be sure to look south across 20 while you're there; from some angles, Greystone Castle is a pretty nice view.

I have no idea where I got the idea that he was there. It explains why I've never been able to locate the grave.....
Thanks for the 'gentle' straightening out...

There's a really neat cemetery in Granbury south of Fort Worth, too.

Oakwood cemetery.

Accidentally exposed Fuji Acros 100 at 400. Had to soup it for 17 minutes in D-76 1:1 to compensate.

Still an interesting shot.

I mixed things up the other way on vacation; loaded Tri-X 320 into the old Ansco in the dark, thinking it was Acros 100 and shot bright desert landscapes in blazing sun. With the weakest mix I could find for T-Max Dev and re-working the numbers to dev it a few degrees cool, (stretching the time as far as I could) it came out better than I expected. Still not great, but a few were passable.

Great shot, Colyn!

I was thinking about trying to find Oakwood Cemetery this weekend. Do you (or does anyone else) know the times that you can access the cemetery? I'm assuming that it is closed during the evening hours (especially with Halloween coming up and kids doing crazy things), but I was wondering how early in the day I could get in there.

Thanks,
