Thunderbirds at Alliance Airshow - 10-10-2008, 08:02 PM

Made it out to Alliance today, just in time to see the Thunderbirds practice. The took off around 1430, and were still flying 45 minutes later. The lighting varied greatly, and could be pretty tough, depending on the direction you were facing. I took a lot of shots, but have only edited few so far.

#1 is very eye-catching. Good colour and sharpness - the light really worked well there.

Tom, I was standing on a grassy knoll between the tower and what I think was the visitor center. I parked right up front in a lot labeled "shuttle parking". The place was practically empty. I bet there weren't more than 20 or 30 people there.

Thanks Daniel. I think I have a lot of throw away shots too.

They're all nice, but I agree with Daniel about the first one. Very nicely captured!

So, Best Vantage Point During the Show? - 10-11-2008, 09:04 AM

So the family will be going there Sunday - can anyone tell me any good vantage points for photography that they have found on previous visits? I want to get some good pics for my father-in-law, who is a big fan of these military planes.

I'll have my 70-200 2.8 with the 1.7 TC ready.... :)

The spectator area is on the east side of the runway. The setting sun is always a challenge.
I like to get south of the spectator area if possible. Getting west of the runway is not much of an option at Alliance. The roads get closed.
The best place to see the smaller planes is the spectator area.

David,

I think I was standing just to your left yesterday. I had the beige hat on. Great shots btw.

Here are a few I took:

Yep, that must have been me. It was nice to "almost" meet you. Nice shots! I still have about 400 shots to sort through, and it's going pretty slow so far (I'm working all weekend). Just as I was leaving, there was a woman walking up with Canon gear, and a very impressive lens that looked like it was about 3 feet long. Did you happen to see her?

Nice shots. I posted a couple in Captain Tom's thread. I need to go through the rest of them. I shot from Cabela's extended parking lot.

I guess I missed her.

I'll be back out there tomorrow to catch the rest of the performers.
