id like to see some shallower depth of field. seeing traditional native american headdressings with warehouses in the background arent very appealing. keep in mind backgrounds and angles before you shoot. GL.

David
Very nice work. I like the low angle in the first shot.
Were you using one of those nice Canon lenses and setting in the arena on one of the front wooden benches by any chance ?
We were there just about all day Saturday and part of today. We got home Saturday night about 11:00pm. Today was better in that it was cloudy. The quick down pour did cool things of briefly. It seems for me one of the things that made it hard to get a good shot was the bacground/seating all around the arena. Saturday the big thing was the bright sun.
I have quite a few shots where I froze the Indian dancers but I'm not happy with them. I tried a few with slower shutter speed to get some blurring in the action and I'm not quite happy with them either. But maybe I am being to critical of myself.
Here is one of the shots I took today that I somewhat like and this is based on my CRT monitor and not an LCD. I calibrate my CRT with the Spyder system but I am need to do it again.
I hope you don't mind me sharing your thread

Thanks Robin.
No, I was at the sidelines for most of them with my Nikon D2X. The first one I did go into the arena and lay on the grass to get a ground view. I was there today and only got to watch the dancing for about 30 minutes as I was watching the kids today while my wife had a bunch of women over at our home. It was time for me and my 2 sons to run like the wind! :-) Nice having a guys day out but kind of takes care of doing any real photography with a 9 and 11 year old in tow.
I usually spend a lot more time scoping out the area and getting in the middle of the action with a 24-70 or wide angle. These shots were all with my 70-200 from whatever vantage point I could get.
I would have loved to been there longer and last night when the sun was going down. But it was a fun quick shoot. I'd love to see some more of your shots.

I'm still working on mine, but here is a couple from Sunday. Need to get some little league shin guards like that guy with the Canon had. I had on a Billy Bob's t-shirt.

Bill
I remember seeing you there! You were the gentleman setting inside the arena near the center
Who was that masked bandit on the far left do you lnow?
Sorry we did not get a chance to say howdie but we were bushed! I wanted to come back because it was cloudy and all day Saturday you could have roasted a chicken out there. We stayed there Saturday night intil 10:30pm. My wife bought tickets in most of the raffles and we waited to see if she would win
I browsed your PBase galleries and they look nice, makes me want to move to Vernon
I noticed your wedding day in PBase as August 24, 1974. Our wedding was on August 25, 1974. Quote: |

And If you moved to Vernon, then you too would have to drive three hours to events to photograph.
I think I will try some more of these up in Oklahoma. Had good time except for the guy at the mike...or maybe I not into Native American humor

That would be the guy
Yeah I guess Vernon would not be such a good idea after all
Native American Indians are strict when it comes to Photography.
The announcers name was Darrell Moore, I talked with him Saturday to get permission to be in the arena for shooting. If you get permission and explain what the shots are for you generally have better luck. And it is not adviceable to sell them as stock or other personal gain (fine art prints). News or editoral use is generally ok.
When we went to New Mexico, Arizona and Utah last year it was real tough with the Navajo! At some of the big events they have professional cameras (Pros) are not allowed without prior consent. Quote: |

Great stuff guys!! One of these years I will get to that!! I've always wanted to photograph a pow wow. I'm fascinated by American Indians. Always wanted to be one and used to tell everyone I was part Indian (when I was little, not now). My daughter is part Cherokee from my husband's side. Anyway, I will definitely try and go next year!! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
