Have they actually done anything with the new observation area? I used to love to sit out at the old one on the south side. I went to the "new" one a couple of times but was less than impressed. You can't really see anything from there and it's just a dirt parking lot. I really hope they have, or plan to, do something about making another really nice area.

I stopped by a few weeks ago when in the neighborhood. The new observation area is fully paved and has some tables and binoculars as you can see above. There is a speaker tied into ground control for that side of the airport as well.

If the winds from the south, you will see the planes landing with the approach from behind you. I'd say the best time of the day will be afternoon as the sun will be behind you. A lot of AA's 777 fleet should be arriving between 2pm and 4pm if I remember the schedules correctly. There will also be some takeoffs in that time frame of those planes.

It's a nice place to spend some time -- IMO, it's pretty bland from a photography point of view. It seems to me that the new area is a greater distance from the runways than the former one, and as mentioned in the post above, the new observation area is on the west side of the runways, versus the east as it had been before: different light setup.

My thoughts exactly. I have found that the best time for aircraft photography at that location is in the evening, preferably with the planes taking off to the north. Other than that, it's kind of lame from a photo pov.
