Shooting at Gaylord's ICE exhibit? - 10-30-2008, 06:26 PM

Just wanted to get some thoughts on taking the camera in. I have heard mixed things about whether it's too cold or not, but I'd love to take in my SLR. Any advice, info, etc., would be great.

TIA!

im not on my computer right now or i would show you some shots. I took my DSLR in there last year and it was fine. Little tip make sure there is no condensation on your lens when you walk in. It will freeze it if it is lol, happen to me last year. There is no issues with taking equipment in, i took a tripod last year. If i get on tonight i will post some images i took from there last year.

Possibility of condensation (make sure your equipment is room temperature before going in) and the cold sapping your batteries are biggest issues in the cold. I'd love to see some photos from past years ... been thinking about heading out there this time around.

I've done this in the past and everything was fine. The fingers on my right hand were very cold and stiff after a couple of hours in the sub freezing temp. It's quite dark so you'll need some fast lenses along with a flash.

I would recommend taking a large ziplock bag to put you camera in before you leave the exhibit. That way any condensation will form on the bag and not on your camera.

I'm not sure what happen to my edited shots but here are a few from last year. I just resized them, these were taken with a 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Tamron lens. I think the ISO was 400-800, the shots aren't great i had just got the camera and this was the only glass i had at the time.

Thanks so much for all the great info and examples. Those are awesome.

I was debating on which lens to take. My kit lens is a zoom (18-135, 3.5-5.6), but I prefer my 50mm because it's sharper and faster. However, with the prime, I can't always get back far enough to get the shot if there's nowhere to back up or if there's a lot of people.

well i was going to go back this year and take my prime lens but since that won't happen i would suggest using your 50mm and a tripod.

Is this easy to do if I'm there during a regular visit with everyone else, not a special arranged one? I'll just be visiting the exhibit with my husband and toddler son.

Yep i went solo during the middle of the week and i had no issues from them about it. They really don't give you a time limit in which you have to make your way through it either. It cost a nice penny and its not all that long even stopping to shoot photos lol.

Charge - 11-21-2008, 03:04 PM

Hey guys, I just got off the phone with the Gaylord...

They told me, if I were a progessional photog, or had that kind of gear going in... there was a $1500 fee to shoot ANYWHERE in the Gaylord.

Anyone else heard of that???

Howard

Oh, for all of these I used my 18-200mm. Most were on a tripod at 200iso, no flash. Some were handheld when I walked through a second time to get some different angles without the tripod.

I would suggest using a fairly flexible lens because you don't want to be opening up the camera alot in those temps. When we went in before opening it was 4 degrees!

Lyncca - Gorgeous photos. Thank you for sharing! And thanks for letting me know your lens and ISO. I agree, I don't want to change lenses in there, so I think I'm going to take my 28-75, 2.8. I won't have time for a tripod (I'll have my toddler son with me). Do you mind posting your s/s and ap settings on these?

Thanks!
