I need some Help!! - 11-05-2008, 05:41 PM

Ok so sat afternoon i made a huge mistake and it resulted in getting my equipment stolen. I allowed a friend to barrow my equipment to take photos of their kids peewee football game. He put my camera bag with all my gear in his car, now im guessing someone saw this and had seen him shooting pics with my gear so they knew what was in there. They smashed out his window and stole my bag along with a Monopod i allowed him to barrow also. Here is a list of things taken (to the best of my memory) so if you could keep your eyes open for it.

Bag - Tenba Shooutout Large black and grey
Mono Pod - Manfrotto with 488rc2 head

Camera - Sony A100

Sony Lens - 500mm f/8, 135mm f/1.8 (carl zeiss), 85mm f/1.4 (carl zeiss), 50mm f/1.4, 28mm f/2.8 wide-angle

Other Lens - Tamron 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Di-ll LD, Lensbaby 3G

Accessories - Flash 58AM, cable release, lens filters, couple of 4G memory cards, and other odds and end stuff in the bag.

I could use any help in trying to recover my gear as my friend only had liablity insureance and the insureance company said tough luck basicly. My insureance company was no such luck enough as it wasn't taken out of my home or my car. We thought we had a solid lead on who might have taken the gear but that was a dead end. Someone saw a black G-35 with black rims and silver lip drive away really fast but they got the plate number wrong. That or they had a stolen plate on the car, but thats all we have to go on not even sure that car had anything to do with it. Thanks in advance for any help this is a long shot but im willing to try anything at this point.

Do you have homeowners insurance? It may cover theft away from home. I just insured all my equipment last week through my homeowners for $70 a year, its well worth it. Also make sure you get the serial number of the items taken so they can be entered into the computer system by the PD. Good Luck..
Dont forget to check craigs list and ebay daily..

That really stinks. You are a better man than me because I don't think I'd let anyone borrow my equipment, much less the quantity and quality of yours.

No i have renters insureance and i was told tough luck by them today. I asked my buddy to see if his homeowners insureance would cover it but i don't think they are cause its not on his list of inventory items. (crossing my fingers though)

Toddy trust me this will be the last time anyone but me touchs my gear when im not around. Heck i don't even think i'll let me g/f touch any new gear i get now lol. Lucky for me i think i might be able to get another camera and a couple of lens but not sure what yet. I had been saving to buy the new A900 for when it came out but looks like that will be going towards replacement gear now. I can only hope Santa gets my letter this years and helps me out lmao. Thanks for the pm's everyone and i hope this person gets whats coming to them as well.

Sorry to hear about the stolen equipment, I have mine covered with separate equipment specific insurance. Did you record the serial numbers of your equipment?

Sorry to hear about your incident but Wait, if the insurance doesn't work out, your BUDDY doesn't has a plan to pay you back?!?

Having a buddy trusted enough to loan them a few optics and cameras means more than that. If the equipment got jacked or damaged, his fault or not, you buddy should be the responsible party. I hope you aren't ending up paying for his misfortune.

I have personally borrowed and loaned lenses from/to a shooting buddy, thousands of dollars worth of equipment, and we never blinked. Just comes and takes it, returns it clean and on time. But before we do so, I always have a saving of similar value to compensate if anything should happen to the equipments. That's our buddy system.

I did get the serial numbers recorded so if anything turns up they have the numbers. While yes it was my friends fault who lost my gear i have to take on some of this myself. Plain and simple i have learned not to loan anything to anyone who can not afford to buy the equipment themselves. While this is a good friend of mine i knew if something happen he couldn't pay to replace anything. I didn't think anything would happen so i allowed him to use the gear. Lesson learned and it will never happen again i can assure you of that. While it does suck that im now out of a camera and some glass its not worth lossing a friend over. He feels horriable about it and even more so cause he knows he doesn't have the money to replace the gear. Anyway i see what you're saying but i would rather keep a friend rather than lose him over 5K worth of equipment.

Good attitude. You're right, look at the big picture, not worth losing a true friend over. I think you just came up with a Hallmark card.

Hey not bad if it takes off i'll split the profits with you lol. I think the person i feel the worst for out of this is my Godson. Yesterday he was "like great when i go Pro and i sit down to look back over the photos of my progression, i will have no place to start. Thanks Dad not only did you lose Uncle CJ's camera but all my priceless memorys to boot!" Take about a kick in the sack lol his own kid was harder on him than i was lol.
