Oil Derrick - 11-05-2008, 06:50 PM

Does anybody know of a place to get good, relatively clean shots of an oil derrick? Preferably without getting myself shot or arrested? I'm sure there are some in the Barnett Shale, but I just don't know where....

Thanks in advance -
Debbie

The Barnett shale is primarily a natural gas field, so technically there aren't any oil derricks. I'll probably be corrected by those I know who are insiders.
They come and go in a week or so, but have subsided a lot since the economic crash.

Perhaps old man winter can change that.

Go to the new Founder's Plaza at DFW airport. There's one pretty close. I was there Monday and got some good shots. I'm at work now, but can post some pictures in the morning so you can get an idea.

That makes sense -- please excuse my ignorance (in this case and in many more to come, I'm sure).

call it a drilling rig, that'll be generic enough.

There are little oil pumpers north and west of the Metroplex.

The gas drilling rigs (pictured above) pop up all over the place, but aren't going up nearly as fast as they were six months ago because the price of gas is really low. Depending on how many wells they are drilling on a pad site, the initial drilling and fracing can take a month or less.

Not the best picture, but this is what you'll find at DFW's Founders Plaza:

Actually, it probably has more to do with the change in regulation in Tarrant county. They used to be able to drill like 300 ft or yards away from residences, but now it's like 600? I don't remember exactly what the numbers are, but basically they have to be twice as far away now as they used to.

If you drive around at night, you will spot them easy.

They told us that they only take about 2 weeks to drill, so they move around a lot.

Thanks for the responses! I'm planning on driving around some in the next week to see what I can find.

My dad has been talking about commissioning some sort of art to celebrate his genius in retaining mineral rights on a small plot of land (it hasn't been a crazy windfall, but has certainly been a nice bonus!) Coming up on Christmas, I thought I'd see if I could come up with something - starting with a photograph, perhaps adding some hand-painting.

We're talking gas here not crude. As soon as old man winter blows in, the demand will increase again.
