Renting a Camera Body? -DFW- - 11-17-2008, 09:59 PM

I need to rent an extra camera body in a couple weeks and I know that Arlington camera offers camera bodies for rent. I was curious if anyone had any other resources for camera rentals in DFW?

I'm pretty sure Competitive rents bodies as well. For me, the extra drive is worth it to go to Arlington Camera--I just like them better. YMMV

FW Camera is a great resource. I have, and still do, rent from Arlington Camera, however, FW Camera Supply has more rental gear in stock. I have never had a problem with equipment availability with them. . . unlike Arlington Camera.

Both great places though.

I don't have a clue where Competitive is. Which side of the metroplex would that be? I think I'm going to check out FW Camera's prices to see how they compare to Arlingtons. It'll be a little further of a drive, but may be worth checking into.

I also love the idea of having the equipment sent to me in-home. That would be fabulous. I'm just not sure that if the price beats what I can do locally...

If you can afford to wait, I'd definitely go with Lensrentals.com. I rented the Canon 100-400mm from the for two weeks. I think I paid about $140 for it WITH insurance and shipping. They seem to be cheaper than most other places for rentals. You can also reserve gear fairly far in advance if you need to.

Competitive is just a bit west and north of downtown Dallas on Irving Blvd. I can't remember the cross streets exactly though. But, like I said, if you don't mind driving to Arlington, Arlington Camera would be my suggestion.

You can get Competitive's phone number at http://www.competitivecamera.com/ and compare prices before you go there. Competitive may be a little impatient with you on the phone or when you go there. As Scott said, if you can wait you will pay better prices for the mail order Lens Rental (better than Arlington or Competitive). Just won't have the facility of getting a quick exchange if something is not working right or to your satisfaction. Lens rental ships Fedex 2 day

Light Tec in Dallas is great place to rent your lens. They are on Chemical St.
They are off Motor Sty. Not far from Competitive Camera

I've used lensrental.com and been very pleased with their service.

they would rent you a 40D for $91/wk.

Keep in mind that most of these local stores have a weekend special where you can rent the camera/lens from Friday afternoon until Monday morning for a one day charge.

There is also Dallas Camera just a few doors down from Light Tec. LT used to require a huge deposit... Dallas Camera just takes a credit card for deposit.

Light Tec hasn't made me give them a huge deposit - just a credit card. I have used them plenty of times and they are always nice to deal with. They are my primary source for rental, but if they don't have what I want, I'd call Competitive or Dallas Camera. All are fairly close to me geographically, as well, a big plus in my book.

Competitive requires you a credit charge equal to the replacement value of whatever you are renting until you get it back. That makes sense, I guess, but not everywhere requires that.
