CF cards ON SALE this weekend. - 11-26-2008, 04:31 PM

Don't know if you guys get Jeff's newletter from FW Camera.

Couple of things that might interest somebody..

Sandisk 4gb Extreme III Compact Flash
reg: $69.99
This weekend only: $25.00

SanDisk 8gb Extreme III Compact Flash
reg: $74.99
This weekend only: $40.00

I'm in no way advertising for FW Camera; I just thought these were good prices for cards and since we'll all be busy this coming holiday season, someone might need an extra card.

Although email must be printed and brought in to get it for the special price. This Fri and Sat. (11/28-29/2008) only.

If you don't get the email, let me know if you want it. Just PM me and I will forward it to you..

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Fry's has 16GB Kingston cards for under $30 (limit one per customer) - Amazon has the same cards for about $38 (no limit!)

One thing to keep in mind is the larger the card, the more images stored on it, the more images you're likely to lose if something goes wrong. I am a believer that the sweet spot is the 250 images per card point. But that's just me.

Thanks for sending the email Ross. We went early this am and they didn't even ask for it. It was an expensive trip (ok not really) 4 4gb cards and one 8gb. A rubber for my 5d. and Elinchrom skyport for my lights.

I just bought (3) 8GB SanDisk Extreme III CF cards at B&H for a total of 94.80 which included shipping. However, they are offering a rebate in form of a VISA debit card. $15 for 1.. $35 for 2, and $70 for 3.

So my total will end up being $24.80 for (3) 8GB CF cards. Granted, it'll come as a VISA card, but heck I'll use it for groceries or gas.

$25 for 24GB of excellent CF... Not bad.

I had considered the Kingston too (I have several of their 2 and 4GB cards)...They work well, but the speed is not as great as it could be. Figuring that I could use the speed of the Extreme III's in the 5DMKII and 50D.... I would have liked to get the Extreme IV's, but this was a deal too good to pass up. Of course, in a month or 2, we'll see UDMA cards like the IV's going for great prices... Just the nature of the beast I suppose.

Now that we don't work in dark rooms anymore(don't you miss those safe lights?) more than ever, you need to practice safe photography!
[/end thread derailment]
I have 4 of the 16GB King's and took two for a spin yesterday. Works fine!

I keep getting those nagging thoughts, so I bulked up on the 16's and will be duping them in the D3's dual slots on weddings and events! Not that I have had a problem, nor that I will...

Question is... How many 21mpix RAW images will fit on an 8GB card (average)? The 50D surprised me at how big the RAW files can get...some are 20MB each and that is "only" 15mpix.

While I completely agree on the thoughts about losing images in case of failure. I can honestly say I have missed more shots due to having to change cards than from failure. While I am sure this will not continue to be the case forever...It has been my experience so far. I do tend to cycle through cards though and get new ones ever year or so..So I will go knock on some wood now.
