We went to Fossil Rim Wildlife Park Saturday for the Sunset Safari. Drinks and dinner at the safari camp were excellent followed by the 2 hour drive through the park in their safari trucks. The drive started at about 8:30 PM so it was fully dark. The guides used red-filtered spotlights to find and identify the animals for us. Many of the animals, such as the Barbary Sheep, Blackbucks, Addax, and some of the deer came up to be fed by us. The Cheetahs were also visible, but the giraffes did not approach the vehicles. What we did see also were several indigenous animals - armadillos, jackrabbits, a red fox, and several turkeys.
I took a number of shots, many of which are dominated by the red spotlights rather than by my 420EX flash. I'll be posting some when I go through them. It was also difficult to shoot the animals from the crowded truck as you were facing the opposite side of the truck and had to shoot through or around people or twist around to get the shot. Also, because of the size of the group - 50 people, four trucks - they tended not to linger very long in one location to give each vehicle a chance (we were in the lead vehicle). All in all though I got a lot of shots I didn't expect to get for the reach of my flash and lens.
I would do the Sunset Safari again, but next time stay there overnight in the safari camp.
