Very nice! I've done a few of the Honolulu night skyline and LA from the airport. Beautiful shots. I think there is something very intriguing about night shots.

Nice images I really like the last one but would give the top of the building just a touch more space and I would crop off some of the sky in the second one and bring your subject matter up from the bottom half of the composition. Great exposures on all of these!

Great Pictures... in a word... Stunning.

I have tried night shots before with less than optimal results. Can you let us know how you decided the fstop and shutter speeds? When I shoot, I never know how many seconds to let the shutter open and then don't get a dark sky.

Care to share your insight?
Scott

James,

Very nice work. Yes please share with us your process with these images.
Also, did you just rent a room or did you get special access to the W for your shots?

Rented a room at the hotel for the White Rock Marathon. My wife and I really like the hotel and you can't beat the location for the start/end of the marathon.

We stayed there in 2007 as well, but they used to close the pool level after sunset, this year it was open at night.

Nothing special about the process. I usually use center-weighted metering, Av and I adjust the EC based on how much of the night sky is in the frame. If I plan on making an HDR photo, I will auto-bracket 5 or 7 shots.

Here is the EC for each shot here:

1: +1
2: +1
3: 0
4: 0

20D, EF-S 10-22, EF-S 18-55, EF 28-135 IS, EF 75-300 IS, EF 50 F/1.8 plus 1.4x & 2x extenders
