The Richard Avedon Exhibit - 09-23-2005, 02:25 PM

Has anyone gotten an opportunity to go see it at the Amon Carter yet? I went last weekend and it was a sight to behold. I'm not old enough to have seen it / appreciate it on its first tour 20 years ago, but read that it had opened to very mixed reviews. Maybe its just me and my style, but I thought it was great.

The detail and contrast he was able to capture with only available light is just amazing.

I am also so jealous of the detail he captures in his subjects eyes. If I can ever get just one portrait to have those eyes, I would be very happy.

If you haven't seen it yet and like this sort of thing, go...it's worth the $8.

It's on my list of things to do, and soon. It's an opportunity that ALL portrait photographers should take advantage of. I'm glad to hear you liked it.

In my mind, he was one of the "masters" of people photography.

"A Must See..." - 09-23-2005, 09:53 PM

My wife and I went to the exhibit last night. It is incredible, a "must see" for all photographers. If you do go, be sure and ask about the photograhs of Avedon working, it is not with the exhibit, but in another area. Just ask one of the employees of the museum, and they will tell you where to find it.

It is a documentary of his work, with personal stories and letters from the peoples lives he touched.

BTW, if you are on a budget, Thursdays are free from 5pm until closing (8pm).

All of his shots were done with an 8x10 view camera, with an extemely shallow depth of field. He was an incredible photographer.

Take the time to go....

Jeff

I saw it when it originally toured here, I think it was at the DMA?
I hope to catch it before it leaves.
At the time the stark reality of his work just shocked a lot of people as best as I remember but I really liked it.
