I got laid off from EDS back in January, and I'm having very little luck finding a new job. Or even solid leads for that matter. In fact, it seems that I just keep hearing about more layoffs and less opportunities.
So I'm looking for help where ever I can find it.
Two things you could do that would take very little time on your part.
Go to http://resume.jimmarch.com/
There you can view my resume online, or download it in Word, Acrobat, or a zipped format.
Email it, print it, or in some way just hand it to whoever does runs the IT Department where you work.
Another way I'm looking for help, is through a Facebook group I created. I'm trying to leverage the power of social networking to spread the word. http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=54470224502
I know some of you may be full time photographers, and don't have an IT director to give my resume to. So by joining this facebook group, you can then use the Invite Link to invite all of your friends to that group. Hopefully they too will do the same, and so, and so on...
I know there are jobs out there. And there are jobs out there that I'm not only qualified for, but I'm the best candidate for the position. The problem is the number of impossible hoops you have to go through, just to get someone to look at your resume.
A great example is the Army Airforce Exchange is hiring. They are doing a new roll-out of Windows 2008 Server in a PCI Compliant network. Well, I'm certified on Windows 2008, I have over 9 years working for the Navy and Marine Corps as a contractor, and already have the clearance they require. AND I've implemented large scale PCI networks. I couldn't be better suited, but I can't seem to get my resume to the right people over there.
At any rate, I'd appreciate it you have a minute or two to just help spread the word.

I'm facing the same issues. It's not just getting your name out there, it's the fact that so few companies are hiring right now. But I wish you the best!

I got laid off from Lockheed Martin 14 months ago and I am still hunting. Things are tough out there, I know from experience.
Maybe we should form our own company. LOL

I really feel for you guys who are out of work. And it's especially tough when companies are laying people off. I went through this back in the early 80's, so I know what you are up against.
Good luck to everyone! | | | |

Not sure if I'm going to regret this when I wake up tomorrow, but I know someone who is hiring IT people right now....
I'm not 100% on the specifics, but it's one company that's actually hiring in this tough time. If you're interested, you can send me an email with a CV and your resume to friends @ table4photography dot com
I won't read your resumes, I'll just forward them to the contact. If you send me a PM or email, please don't expect a response immediately. I'm a FT photographer so my clients and business come first, but I figured I might also try to help out some people going through tough times right now. :-)

I will be hiring a couple of people in the next 30-45 days, hopefully, if anyone wants to send a resume to me. One position will be for a developer, needs to know Cold Fusion, and .Net and VB6 helpful. The other will be a sales and marketing position, limited travel on this one. By limited travel, talking about a couple days a month.

A word from someone who has been there a time or 2…..stay flexible and don’t limit yourself. I moved from computer mfg to oilfield downhole a few years ago, and while it was tough and took more than a single move, it was well worth it.
Look outside the particular industry you’ve been in, and try to dig up some similarities instead of differences. Look at former customers and folks that used your services in the past; look at folks that did work for you as well. You already know what they can do or need to have done, so you’ve got an advantage right there. Don’t limit yourself to IT specifically, look at folks that use IT in their business, whatever their business may be….there’s a lot more of those around today anyway. You might look at a position that interfaces with outside IT providers. You know the ins and outs, the lingo, the potentials and the limitations already.
You might want to stress the non-technical aspects in interviewing or resumes. Talk about program management aspects, planning, scheduling, organization skills. You might have to think creatively on some to see the bigger picture (which is more easily sold!). And target those resumes: add/subtract key items based on the ad you answer, or what you see in the corporate website. Use keywords you glean from their websites, often large companies use bots to scan resumes looking for certain key words; if the bot doesn’t see some, flush…..When answering a specific ad, I revised the resume specifically for that ad, using their words, talking more about things that I could tell they were interested in and dropping some things I knew were superfluous.
There’s nothing wrong with having several resumes with totally different targets, I had 3-4 in Monster when I was looking. Some were targeting management slots, others more technical, some program management, some as individual contributor. Update and make minor revisions every few weeks to the Monster, et al resumes to keep them fresh, many look only at new postings or those less than 1 month old. (I once decided to just update one of mine on Monster, just correcting some dates, not even looking at making a change…I hadn’t touched it in over a year….within days of updating it I received a couple of calls!)
(Once a resume on Monster (et al) gets a bit old, they assume you've already found something, are overpriced or just too weird...it ain't fair, but they're not in the business of being fair, they need to fill slots.)
Don’t be afraid to hook up with a headhunter, they can really help with ideas and they often can get you some attention when the field is crowded. Careful tho, there are some out there that are no better than slugs (if they want you to pay for ANYTHING (classes, photos, coaching, charm school...anything…run away!). The good ones will have a specific opening in mind and are usually already working wit a client for a position to fill. My present job came via a headhunter who found me via Monster.

Jim:
I would offer a bit of moolighting if you are interested. I have a server that has 5 to 6 computers tied to it. The guy who has maintaned it for me moved to Cedar Creek and if I can help you out with work as I need something e-mail me. Your resume show lots more knowledge than what it takes to keep me running . Heck you probably forgot more about computers than I know.
