In Search of a photographer... - 03-31-2009, 08:31 AM

About 3 yrs ago my kids played at Western Hills Little League.. There was a photographer who used to come out and take photos of all games. Great action photos of all kids on each team. He would then return the following week and drop off pics with each team and had each team sell them for him.

He would sell 5 x 7 at decent rates..

Either way.. I was hoping to find this guy. I have no clue who he was or his company. I do know he was working solo.

But Im hoping that maybe others here might know of someone who is doing this or might be doing something similar n the fort worth area. If so please send me some info, I would love to get someone to come out on a saturday and to some photos..

if you have any info please post it here.

He must have worn himself out if he was working solo!

Well, you said "all games" and to get decent shots of every kid does take some work (maybe not "hard work" but still time and effort). Was he getting paid anything just for being there? If not, he was working hard!

I thought about doing that this year. There's leagues all over the city and Western Hills is one I thought about but I did meet with the folks at White Settlement. As far as I know, it's commissioned sales. In fact nearly all leagues expect some income from your profits. Some even want money upfront and it is a LOT OF HARD WORK. These kids play ball several days a week and multiple teams. That's just the way it works from what I know about it. I don't know of any that will pay you to come out and be the photographer no matter how good you are. Let me know if you do...

I thought I would do on line sales but I'm not sure that's what they want either. Ideally, they would like to have prints available that day so be ready to spend money on paper, ink and a printer. I didn't sign up for it so I don't know how profitable it can be. I do feel like if we're going to be doing work like this we should be making some profit though.

I know some parents are there anyway with their digital cameras so maybe those are good enough.

Yeah, Roy, I didn't submit a proposal to shoot a youth soccer league this year because of the work (and headache) it would've been. The league president said they really preferred for the coach and assistant coach of each team to get 8x10 team photos rather than a monetary kickback. But, there are 250 teams in the league. And in addition to team and individual shots, they wanted some action shots, too. It would not be a solo project for sure!

On-site sales is the way to go, I've heard. The community here is Internet savvy, but they don't have the time to mess with it. Much better to sell to them when they are captive and have it on their minds. So that would take at least a few people dedicated to that endeavor alone. And equipment. And insurance. And power supplies. And patience.
