Historic Locations Photo Project - 04-01-2009, 09:55 AM

My wife is wanting some historic Dallas/Ft. Worth locations for some wall art. So was going to ask on here and see what is the locations that pop into your head when you think of historic Dallas/Ft. Worth.

The few I thought of were

The Stockyards, Dealy Plaza, Texas Stadium (Maybe), Reunion tower.

I know there are alot that I am not thinking of so that is why I am picking your brains.

Texas Stadium is a part of history, but unless you or she is a rabid Cowboys fan, it's an ugly structure!

"Historic" makes me think of some of the older neighborhoods, the Tarrant County Courthouse in Fort Worth (and much of downtown FW, like the mini Flat Iron building, etc.).

I live in a historic district and there are a number of such neighborhoods around DFW - there are beautiful old homes and doors and windows, which make great subjects.

I think Thanksgiving Square is cool, but I don't think that's exactly historic or anything.

Maybe Fair Park? I dunno!

Dallas? Historic? I thought everything more than 20 years old had been torn down.

I would photograph:

The Cotton Bowl before Texas Stadium. The Fair Grounds in general may be good. If you can get in during the off-season.
Is any of the original Love Field left standing?
Denton, McKinney & Sherman may have more old stuff than DFW.
SMU & TCU & NTSU & NTSCW if any of it still exists.
Go find a pasture before it becomes a subdivision. I wish I had photos of some of the pastures & horses where Richardson is now.

Just do it!

Feel free to stop by my 1916 house any day. We try to keep it secret that we're down here, but there's a few left standing. Wish there were more.

I was halfway kidding. I do recall mention of historic neighborhoods. Don't recall where they are.

If I can ever get Lisa (Mrs. Wayne) to go to Dallas we will do just that!

Plan a large format shooting meetup here. If there is a lot of interest, that may be a good reason to come up here :-)

I know you were, but it is so sad how fast some neighborhoods disappeared. I lived in University Park in an original "cottage", built circa 1940 for 10 years. In that time, I'd say 80% of the houses on our street alone disappeared to "McMansions" that took up nearly every blade of grass. At the same time, the "neighborhood" feel disappeared as well. When we finally sold our house, it got scraped immediately. While the house had no historical significance, I literally cried about the huge pecan trees that got dozed along with the house. They practically had those bulldozers started while we were at the closing.

The primary historic districts in Dallas are in East Dallas (down by Baylor), which include Swiss Avenue, Munger Place, Suburban Peak and then there are some conservation districts, which have a little more flexibility (I think) in terms of what can be done with houses. I haven't kept track of all the conservation districts. Winnetka is the historic district in Oak Cliff.

Maybe a bright side of the current crisis is that people will decide they don't really need to live in 5000+ sq ft. boxes.

We do have some home tours in the various historic districts - Swiss Avenue's is usually Mother's Day weekend. It's always interesting to get a peek into these homes. I'll check on dates and post some info on the various tours if anyone is interested.

Thanks Lisa!

Large format outing has a nice ring to it. I'll work on that.

If you poke around my pBASE ALBUMS you will see that I have been shooting a lot of older buildings in Dallas including some homes.

My house is circa 1919 and I love my older neighborhood which is pretty intact.

The white building at elm and good latimer is historic. I forget its name, but it was very important to black culture in Dallas. Also, sons of hermann hall in deep ellum. Historic to the german settlers.

And one of the best live music venues in town. Still go there regularly to catch some great live music. A few weeks ago, they also had tango dancing the same night. Quite a place.
