Question Need Location Ideas in Fort Worth - 04-16-2009, 12:15 PM

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to do a family shoot that I have coming up in a couple of weeks. It is extremely important to me that we keep with this family's personality and style. They are a young couple with a little boy and little girl both under the age of 6. They want something "fun and funky" and that doesn't look like portraits taken at places that everyone uses (in other words, no botanical gardens suggestions or las colinas canals). We are going to get some traditional shots at a nearby park for her family members but she wants something unique for them. Something with an "ooo ahh factor". So fun and not ordinary..... Any suggestions?

If you can find one, a traveling carnival can provide lots of colors, lights, action and motion. Or something along those lines.

Meachum airport has a couple of flight museums.

Stockyards may be too country. Downtown Fort Worth is another good place. Also try around the museums very different from the botanical gardens that everyone shoots in.

you could try Drover's Park just East of the Stockyards. Lots of old trees and grass and not many people seem to even know it is there...

Do a search on here for graffiti. A few good spots have been discussed recently.

There are the stones/art installation on the south end of the Kimball (that below level pit that you hardly ever see people down in) which is easily accessable and allows you to work with the different height of the pieces for setting portraits. Then all over the Museum district there are different backdrops that can be used including a distant Ft Worth skyline.

I think if you get too bizarre of a background the photos will look very dated in the clients eyes after only a couple years while if you give them a more classical background they will come back to use you again.

Really

There is always the Train Station at Grapevine. That is a fun place and they are camera friendly. Nash Farm in Grapevine, with all of the old antique farm equipment, and turn of the century farm house, is another thought.

You could take them to south Vickery and mix them in with the vagrants and the people hiring on the corners.
or
Take them to their local blood bank and have them donate and you take the family together doing that.
or
go to a shooting range and hook them up on the target tracks and have the kids pretend to shoot them.
or
Nah ! the rest of my ideas are too strange.

What about getting a inflatable couch and put it in different locations. Have them do different poses.

Try the FTW Duck Pond, just off of Montgomery, west of DT. There are several good spots within 1,000 yards of the pond.

We were downtown for another shoot this past weekend and I couldn't seem to find it. Where is this located?

This is a pretty interesting idea. I don't think it will fit these particular clients (and I'm not sure of any carnivals for this upcoming weekend) but it is definitely something I'd like to try in the future so thank you for the idea. Very different!

Also a very cool idea but not that wow factor for my clients... my own children would love this though so thank you for the idea. I wasn't even aware that they had museums there and I've lived close by there all my life!

This is a real possibility. We may do this so thank you for the reply!

These were extremely different ideas! Definitely have a "wow" factor. Maybe a little to querky for these clients though. But thank you!

Another great idea. I'd love to try this... But could you imagine having to blow that thing up on location?! PUFF PUFF PUFF PUFF!!! Just kidding. I need to find one of these somewhere... spencers maybe? What made you think of this?! I definitely need some practice when it comes to creative ideas I think. Thank you. :)

I also like the duck pond idea as well as the cotton candy (***note to self... bring wet wipes for clean up and use towards END of shoot ;) ). The train station at Grapevine is a regular location for us. We love shooting there... especially when doing family sessions. Graffiti backdrops are fun too but I'm thinking I'll pass those up for this particular shoot. I do appreciate ALL of the suggestions so thank you ALL!!!

One thing I was thinking about (I've seen some of the other photogs here do it) is to take them to a junk yard. Does anyone know of a really good one where they'd allow us to shoot? And if so, are there fees required for entrance or photography? The shoot is this coming Saturday. I'm praying that we don't get rained out. I'm sure most of you are also dealing with the same type of thing having to reschedule due to mother nature. GRRRR!

Thank you again for all your creative suggestions. :) Y'all are too awesome! Once again, I'm inspired by the people on here. Have an excellent day!!!

Perhaps he really meant Trail Drivers Park which is on NE 28th St. About a mile East of N. Main St.
There is also a very small park immediately south of the Stockyards Station where the RR tracks cross over the creek.
