Lead for October '09 wedding... - 05-12-2009, 12:44 PM

I realize we have a wedding network sticky, but I'm curious who is currently shooting weddings and specifically interested in the following work...

The daughter of a long-time family friend is getting married in October. The family has asked me to take all the photos. I'll be shooting the bridal and engagement portraits, rehearsal dinner, and reception - but I'm not comfortable shooting the actual wedding solo.

To finalize the proposal, I'm looking for a lead shooter specifically responsible for the required documentary shots (from a shot list) before, during and after the wedding ceremony. I will be a roaming second for the wedding.

Experience: The more the better

Equipment:
  • 40D or better (40D, 50D, 5D, etc.)
  • L-series lenses
  • Off-camera flash
  • Studio flash setup (monolights or heads/packs) for the post-ceremony individual and group photos

Shot volume: 350-500 frames (estimated)

Image Quality: RAW + JPG-small

Provision: (revised)
  • Occasional person-to-person soft proofing on camera (for composition, histogram/exposure, etc.) during shoot
  • Transfer all images to laptop prior to departure from ceremony (you keep your cards/images as backup)
  • I will handle all sorting, retouching, etc.

Payout: (revised)
  • $200/hr flat fee ($600 min) + 50% profit on sales of your photos (see edit note below)
  • $300 retainer in advance of ceremony
  • Balance to be paid at the conclusion of the wedding after transfer of images

This is not a creative assignment, and not for someone looking to gain wedding experience. This is for an experienced photographer capable of nailing the required documentary shots at a wedding.

Questions? Post a reply...

Interested? PM a link to your portfolio and/or samples of recent wedding ceremony work.

Thank you...

How many hours are you needing the lead photog for?

BTW, I'm not interested, but just asking because I didn't see that listed.

When you say this:
"50% after validation of image quality and selection."

Does that mean if you don't like the picture you're going to pay the rest and not use the pictures?

And no Nikon shooters, right?

Good questions, thanks for asking...

thejakestir...

Estimate 3-4 hours for the pre-ceremony, ceremony, and post-ceremony shots. All of this will be at the church. Becuase I can't say exactly how long, I changed the rate to $200/hr, $600 min.

By the way, you do very nice work.

toverman...

Yes, 50/50 split on profit of any print sales of your photos. $200/hr is a solid fee for the assignment and the photographer is only required to show up and take photos. I'll handle literally everything else - including the risk.

Alternatively: Anyone willing to do all the post production work, host the shots, go through two rounds of proofing (first me, then the end client), and assume full financial risk for their portion of the assignment has my blessing to keep 100% of the post ceremony sales from his/her shots.

thejakestir...

"50% after validation..."

I edited this part of the project description to be consistent with the edits to provisioning...

Nikon, Canon, doesn't matter - just prosumer or better body and professional glass.

Note:

This isn't a contract posing as a forum post. I'm just trying to get the general ideas across and answer relevant questions. There will be a formal business agreement for the assignment.

PMs replied to...

Project description edited based on several good follow-up questions/comments.

I realize everyone will have different opinions about this, and obviously not every "i" is dotted yet. The entire reason I'm posting here is for an open discussion, well in advance of the event, to hash out all the question and concerns.

Frankly, I've encouraged them to consider other photographers as well (as every bride should do) so it's possible someone on here will end up with the entire event anyway.

Hmm... sounds tempting to throw my hat in the ring. I like no-fuss shoots, and it sounds like you are handling most of the "fuss" here. Not saying I am ready to commit, but feel free to take a peek at my work:

Opportunity is withdrawn - client selected another resource for the wedding - I actually encouraged her to do so based on their offer and previous work.
