Is it common to shoot at same locations? - 05-14-2009, 11:28 AM

Well I have been trying to advertise myself and showcase the current work I have. Lot's of people who have requested for a shoot have also requested to visit a few of the same places that they saw on my website.

I just wanted to know how common is this and do you guys just go ahead and do it?

I did suggest other locations and they were like yes that's ok but we really preffer this place and the one that you took of the person there and there..

It just feels like I'm the one that doesnt have better locations to suggest. I don't want people to think oh those are the only places he goes too.. becasue it's not..

But I agreed to do it.

But what are you're thought's...

Satisfy your client. If they saw something they liked on your website, provide it for them if possible. If you put it on your website, you must have thought it made a nice shoot location......maybe your client does too.

Give them choices.

It might not be new to you, but it will be new to the client.

When you have some free time, sounds like you may want to explore the area for some new locations. Good light isn't that hard to find, and there are a variety of textures and backdrops to complement any mood.

I have found lots of great new locations. I am actually doing some new locatiosn these weekend if weather permits but i do have a few where i will visit previous locations..

Plus I do make lots of suggestions so im sure the more people i get the more new locations I can try out.

If a background is GOOD use it again and again, just try to improve how you use it each time. (no matter who you are you can always improve your work).

Well, how many studio backgrounds does one need? The more the better I suppose - variety being the spice of life - but the magic is with the use of tools, not the tools themselves.

The fewer locations you have in your bag of tricks, the more risk your photography will appear "formulaic" but the creative shooter can find several differrent "looks" for any given location depending on pov, time of day, type of lighting, wardrobe, post-processing, etc.

I'm always on the lookout for new locations - but I do shoot in previous locations because I'm more confident I can get "the shot"...

I have a lot of different locations I shoot at, but I do repeat. I become more comfortable after I know an area.

But, I always make sure each of my shoots are unique. For example, I had one model want pics at Eagle Mountain Lake. Her shoot was on a really dreary, overcast day. Another one loved those and wanted to go there too. But, it was a beautiful, sunny day. Their shoots look completely different from eachother.

Another model contacted me, and guess what.... Lake shots. LOL. I will probably do her at sunset or something. Its fun to play and experiment.

the client is always right...they're paying so the photographer can make them beautiful at any chosen location with their own perspective / vision etc.

I've always run into other photographers shooting at the same location but we shoot in diff. lens, style, lighting etc.

One, the customer is always right. Two, shooting places you are very familiar with will increase your chances of coming home with great pictures.
