I did a session at the canals last October at around 5:00pm. I remember thinking the light was absolutely gorgeous at that time. There were spots where the light was harsh, but it got better later on.

Hi Captain Tom -

Where do I get a permit for the Canals? I'll be going this Sunday for a photo shoot.

Thanks!
Christina

You are "required" to have a permit, but I've never seen anyone actual get one. I just shoot a Senior Portrait session down there today and there were a TON of photographers down there.

The reason for the need for the permit is that there is a photographer who has a viewing area down on the canal and there have been many instances of this photographer having clients in their facility, and other photographers have been down there shooting, and playing loud music with boom boxes. That is the story I was told.

The photogrpaher that has a studio down there is not Open on Sundays, or at least wasn't when I went down there. I shot there on a Sunday afternoon from about 1:30 till about 6:30 and nobody asked anyquestions, or stopped me.

Actually, the reason for the permit is that professionals using the area are required to carry liability insurance (you must have proof of it to secure a permit). There has been at least one incident of someone falling into the canal. "Required" or not is ultimately up to each person, but knowing the rules and not following them isn't a good way to do business. That area is private property, after all.

Actually, the photographer does not have a studio down there. It is too small to be a studio. It is a viewing area only, where they meet prospective clients and show their work after a wedding or what other event they have photographed and then try to get the clients to purchase prints from them.

Wow, never heard the story about somebody falling into the canal. Yuck. That water doesn't circulate very much.

Was down there on Sunday and there is construction taking place on the north side of Lake Carolyn.
