Best fall color in north DFW? - 10-19-2009, 07:18 PM

I have several outdoor shoots coming up with people wanting "fall color" in the backgrounds. Looking around in my area (Flower Mound) I'm not seeing a lot of good color - i.e. bright oranges, reds, yellows, etc. - just trees turning brown or yellow-brown.

Does anyone know of areas in the Flower Mound, Argyle, Lewisville, Grapevine Lake Dallas areas that have good areas of fall color that I can start scoping out???

Thank you...

I've been all over DFW and have yet to see any fall colors. Everything is still green..

It's just not late enough in the season. I know, I'm jealous of all the photographers up North that have beautiful fall colors but we live in Texas. The leaves are just now starting to change. Give it another 3-4 weeks and you'll have some.

From what I've seen either the botanical gardens in Dallas or Ft Worth are about the best bets for color. Specifically in Ft Worth, the Japanese Gardens. But you have to time it right. Give them a call and they can probably give you an estimate of when the colors will be there.

Joe Pool Lake, Cedar Hill State Park, had some good colors last year but it was November before they showed.

Texoma was also nice.

Wrong types of trees around here for those OH WOW Fall colors unless you find a grove of Red Oaks or a few other trees together or go to one of the arboretums. Naturally around here you find elm, pecan and some oaks which just don't have the sugars in the leaves that cause those dark reds and golds.

So if you have clients looking for those backgrounds you need to educate them that they will either have to travel to Arkansas or New Mexico to find them or accept what nature offers us here or pay a fee to shoot at the two big arboretums.

BTW Red Oaks can be hit or miss year to year as to how rich of a red they can turn.

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano? Haven't looked myself but I've seen gorgeous fall color in shots done there in previous autumns.
