Parking Garages in/around Dallas? - 02-24-2010, 06:38 PM

I have a wild hair about doing some pics (either engagement or senior) in the stairwells and on the rooftop of a parking garage. The 2 story one at Preston Center had some neat shops to pose as a backdrop, but I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with this. It's totally all in my head but if I can get these ideas to come out of my camera it could be fun. I just don't know what garages I can get into without keycard access that would serve my purpose. Thanks!

If you can get in you should have no problem getting out. Just look at one and drive in. See if it has what you are looking for. If you have problems just push the button on the exit gate and claim you went in the wrong place.

I shot in a parking garage down in Austin about 4 years ago. All of a sudden, this female guard just goes ballistic on me and my client, saying we can't shoot in there. It was crazy, took me forever to get the lady to settle down. I told her we were going to pay our fee for "parking there", etc...but she was all gung-ho about calling the cops on us. Needless to say, we left pretty quickly.

Those garages are private property so you should go to the office of the mall manager or whoever the owner is and get permission to shoot before trying same. I would just try as many as it takes to get one to allow you to shoot, probably will have to pay a fee, and be sure to have the paperwork saying that you have permission with you to show any guard or anyone else that shows up.

I would take a couple shots showing them what you are trying to do In theory) and also show how much equipment that you would have with you-ie lightstands, reflectors, etc.

I shot a quickie mini e-session in/on a parking garage in Allen, where the Cheesecake Factory is.. I can't remember what exit.. Maybe McDermott? You can see some shots here: Linky Magic! It's not the most fascinating or the greatest view but it was pretty decent. Plus I think there are some other cool spots over there, some grating along the Cheesecake Factory etc.. if you don't mind people giving you funny looks ;) It'd probably be better to shoot on a weekday evening vs on the weekend.
