Question Spectrascope (slide) question (???) - 12-23-2009, 09:45 PM

I'm not sure this will make sense, because I'm having trouble describing what I need, but hopefully someone can decipher my ramblings. (I also hope this is the proper section to ask this question.)

I need help in figuring out how to convert what I think is called Spectrascope slides to digital or print format.

My mother pulled a bag of what looked two connected slides, side by side, that are viewed through a contraption, like the toy ViewFinder.... My grandfather made a whole bunch of these pictures/slides and we have no idea how to convert them.

Can I a) convert them with the same type of machine that allows you to scan a regular slide, or b) does anyone know of a place in Houston that can convert them, safely?

Thanks for any and all input!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
E.

Stereoscope ?

You look through the viewer and they appear to be 3D.

Sounds like stereo pairs. Have you tried GOOGLE to identify what you have?

I'm too easy.

Stereoscopy.com - The World of 3D-Imaging! (3D Photography / Stereo Photography)

Once you have identified exactly what you have, try these folks:

index

If they are are stereo pairs, you may only have to scan one of the pair. You can't maintain 3D on the computer.

Stereoscope! That's what I meant! Thanks, y'all!

Bless your heart, Wayne. I hadn't even left this site to do my own research when I see you have done some work for me.... thank you. That was very kind of you.

And, yes, after looking at the sites Wayne offered up, I do believe I have 3D stereoscope slides. (My mother no longer has my grandfather's 3D viewer, only the slides--precious memories--and we were afraid to cut them for fear of ruining them....) I assumed we couldn't maintain the 3D effect, which is a shame. But, mainly we just want to preserve the pictures my grandfather took.

Again, thank you for your help, Wayne and Kevin. I will continue to do research on the internet. (I just came here first, because I know how helpful and generous the photographers are!)

Off to do a little more research,
E.

If you look around I bet you could find a viewer.
