I have the holders that came with the scanner. The negatives do appear to be very flat in there, and for the most part are still flat. I have been trying to scan these new negatives since they are in the best shape.

John, I'll try sticking them straight on the glass and the emulsion side. Thanks for the tips.

I would also prefer a dedicated film scanner, but am tryng to work with what I have. If I don't have it sorted out by tonight I'll likely be ordering a Plustek 7400 or 7600i.

Thanks Kevin and John for the website. The filmholders are very impressive, but they sadly do not have one for my scanner in 35mm form.

I know this may sound stupid -- but have you removed the top lid so that the top light source can shine through as well? I think it is called the protective sheet? My 8600 came with software called "ScanGear" and it lets me select the scan source. Just wanting to see if it might be something elementary

Okay, so now I am driving myself nuts with which film scanner to buy. My CanoScan 8800F work well for non-transparent items, but according to tests and my own experience, even at maximum resolution you are only getting about 1600 dpi. Flatbed film scanner Canon CanoScan 8800F transparency unit: 35mm slides and film strips, medium format, large format, pictures The V700 returned about 2300 dpi, but it looks like you guys are getting great results from it.

It seems even the PlusTek 7600i only gets 3250 of its claimed 7200 dpi, and the 7400 gets 3800, but lacks the IR dust and scratch repair ability.

So, do I go with a lower cost Plustek knowing I'll get at least 2x the resolution (and in focus) of my Canon, or do I go for a used Minolta 5400 II or Nikon V or 5000?

Anyone know of anywhere in Houston that may have a used Nikon or Minolta scanner?

I absolutely unequivocably loved the experiences that I have had with the Nikon Scanners. I did not do enough film shooting to justify the cost, but if you do, then you will not at all be disappointed in their output.

I tried flipping the film so it scanned the emulation side and saw a very slight improvement, but still soft. I'll try on the glass and both sides next.

Well, that didn't help either. Still seems oof.

I use an Epson V750 for my 120 scans, but I still use my old Nikon Coolscan V for 35mm. It's just more convenient, and the difference in quality can't be seen.

Tom, that seems to be common. I saw very few complaints with scanning MF on a good flatbed, but 35mm seems to be another story. Wanna sell the Coolscan V? haha

I checked the non-transparent scanning and it seems to be very sharp if the source is sharp, so it seems to just be a film issue, or I am insane. I also tried scanning the film at the same resolution as the lab and got a result still OOF.

Betterscanning makes holders with adjustable supports to fine tune the negative height and get it in focus. that said, scanning is an acquired skill. It took me about a year to acquire the skill with B&W. Color is still driving me crazy. Who needs color anyway?
I have an ancient Epson 1680 and I use Epson Scan software. To heck with Silverfast's overpriced software. The Epson 4990 and V700/V750 twins are newer versions of my 1680. Everybody I know who owns a 4990 or 700/750 likes them.

Betterscanning has some great holders, but not one for 35mm with the CanoScan 8800F.

I just won a 35mm film scanner off eBay which I hope to be testing soon. Whenever I cave and go for 120 film I'll check back with the Betterscanning page.

You can shim the Canon holders with thin washers, coins, etc. That only works if the holder needs to go up.

My Minolta 5400 II arrived and is a big improvement. I have to convert the scans to JPG and post them. At 100%, 5400 dpi they look a little rough, but they look great at 50% or so. I also need to try some prints when I get more time.

Camera Co-Op had a Nikon LS-2000 for sale for $200 this past weekend. Came with the box and film holders and it looked hardly used but since it's a ten+ year old model you need a Windows 2000 machine with a SCSI adapter to use it.

I use an Epson V500 to scan all my film from 35mm to 4x5. I scan the 4x5s right on the glass and the other film sizes in the holder with the Epson software.
