just thinking. I am probably confusing comments I have read about Rodinal with the intrinsic grain of a 400 speed film. In this case, Agfa APX 400.
I am just a hack at developing :)

Agfa 400 belongs in Rodinal. What dilution? My Rodinal Guru also says to back way off and agitate gently. Like once every 3 minutes. As I recall, he develops APX 100 at 1:100, 15 minutes @ 75°F. Agitates very gently once every 3-5 minutes. I'll double check and be back.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with grain. Without grain, all of our photographs would look like digital.

Here you go. From user Trius (Earl) at the Rangefinder Forum. Send him a PM and pick his brain.

Quote:
APX100 @ 100, Rodinal 1:100, 20 minutes, 30sec. agitation then 3 inversions every 3 minutes.
The key with Rodinal is to dial way back on agitation compared to other developers and the "standard" (who made it a standard, and when, anyway?) of agitating every 60 or 30 seconds.
Adjust for APX 400.

I agitated too much then. :) 1:50 dilution. I will use it again, no doubt!
I look at film as an experiment, always an experiment. Of Course, there have been some film photos that I took real seriously, and made every effort to get the best results.
And I was rewarded with some good results.
