Mamiya C22 Question - 10-17-2010, 12:27 PM

I know nothing about MF film or cameras and have a question. My uncle recently passed away and wile visiting her aunt she has some negatives that look to be around 2x2 or so. Would these have come out of the Mamiy C22, and if so is there any place in Houston area that can process them?

Thanks in advace,
Cliff

First Choice: AZ Photo Lab in Houston (713) 862-8640. Sorry, but I don't use any Second Choices. There was another lab I used years ago that had locations in multiple citys, but they bought out another lab and for the most part kept all of the other lab's employees. The quality and customer service really suffered. If AZ ever Goes out of business, I guess I will stop using film.

Could have come out of any medium format camera. Why not just find a place that will scan some of the negs for ya?

Easier said than done. If it's not from a popular format (maybe even if it is) They will slap it down on a flatbed and it will look like ass.

Cliff,

Most major cities still have a professional lab or two that will process film and print them for you. If they process the film then they should also have the ability to do a quick scan so you can view the images. Or you may be able to see enough just by having it processed to find out if you want to proceed further.

A lot of cameras would create a square negative.

Film that was used by medium format cameras had a paper backing to keep the film light tight. It will have a gum seal around the roll that will indicate if it has been exposed or not. If the seal band in the middle just states the film type, it has NOT been exposed. Make sure the film has a paper seal band around the film, usually a different color than the film, on which is printed EXPOSED.

Sorry, I should have been more specific and just got to San Antonio from Houston. She thought they were from that specific camera since she saw him using that one the most. I'll have her take the negatives over to AZ Photo Lab when she's actually up in Houston. She lives down near Sugarland and will be away for a couple of weeks.

I was just in for the weekend helping her get some things settled and while doing so she found these and wanted to get new prints from them. They were together for 55 years and since she was 15. One of those very rare stories you just don't see as often any more.

Thanks for the help and didn't mean to poke a hornets nest by asking. If nothing else when she gets back we'll probably be heading back down once she gets back and I'll take them in for her. Now I need to go through a bunch of stuff that she gave to me to go through.

No hornets nest. Being a photographer I seem to be the arbiter of old family negatives. I even made carriers for some of the old black and whites and printed them. It's brought a lot of joy. If you get the chance to use the Mamiya do so. It would be cool to see some new images of a beautiful camera.

I'm actually kind of curious what they would look like if I used this cheapo scanner I picked up that runs 35mm negs and slides. They look to be pretty close to the size of a slide and I can always crop if not exact.

Hmmmmm, now I may just have to try that.

Been there. Done that. Didn't work. Bought a real medium format scanner. I think the Epson V500 accepts medium format film and is relatively cheap. Check the Epson Clearance store for refurbished scanners that are built to handle film even cheaper.
