You need a dark room (closets, bathrooms with windows that can be blacked out will do nicely), enlarger, safelight, chems, trays......

Hop on over to www.apug.org for loads more info.

Easier said than done.

Ask TPF member Big dog. He just finished building one.

http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...room-line.html

It also depends on what you want to do.
1. All analog process = Develop film. Put film in an enlarger. Make real silver wet prints.
2. Analog-Digital process = Develop film-same as above. Put film in scanner. Make inkjet prints.
#1 Requires a real darkroom with sinks & running water.
#2 Only requires a dark space to load film into daylight tanks. A changing tent, changing bag or any room/closet that you can make totally dark is needed for loading film. After that, everything wet can happen in a kitchen or bathroom with the lights on. Scanning & printing happen at a computer.
Good luck.

What is it that you want to do?

You don't need a darkroom to develop film.

More and more people are doing a hybird film/digital process.

Develop, then scan and print.

So, you think the digital will replace film? Actually, that is the reason why I am confused about which one I should choose to start learning photography.

No, it won't. There's room for both and film is still going strong. They are two different mediums (think oil painting vs. watercolor), each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Its up to you to decide which works best for you.

Yea, what she said.

You can use one, the other, both or some of each.

I shoot film and I shoot digital.

But with film, I scan it and ink jet print. Just like you would digital

Wet prints are great. But that is the point where you need a "real" darkroom.

It also helps a lot if you find someone who wants to get rid of darkroom equipment. "Come and get it" is about the going price.

Well, John, it's kind of nice to hear someone interested in darkroom today. After teaching darkroom for 25 years, I have fewer kids really interested. A few come back each year for the "smell" and the feel. I recommend that you take a class at a community college before you jump in and set one up. The truth, I haven't shot film in years, but I get more than my fair share of the darkroom fix in class.
