I think it is a function of how well you rinse and dry them each time. Here in TX, I rarely had a problem with the plastic reels sticking, unless it was *really* humid, and I assume that because I do everything at a warmer temperature (tap water is at ~80 degrees 10/12s of the year...) that the normal rinsing after processing is enough, and the reels air dry sitting on a table in the back yard in no time.
In CT, it was a different story... the water was ice cold most of the time, the basement was really damp and it took a long time for anything to dry - - so I assume they did not rinse well in cold water and dried poorly. The dishwasher was the fix... it was recommended by a photography instructor I rented darkroom space from each month.
