White spots on color negatives. - 01-28-2011, 09:25 PM

I recently bought a negative scanner so that I can archive all my old images that are on 35mm film. The negatives look clean at first glance, but when scanned, there are numerous and I mean numerous white spots on the image. When examining the negatives under magnification I can see the tiny spots. My question is two-fold:
1) Anyone have a clue as to what they are?
2) Can I clean them. If so how?

Thanks for any advice.

You can post an example if you want. Might make it easier.

There are a couple of film cleaners. Kodak makes one.

You use the cleaner with a lint free cloth.

A rocket blower may get them off also.

As a last resort, you can rewash, photo-flow and dry.

Won't blow off and I tried gently wiping with a lint free cloth. Didn't help. They are adhered to or embedded in the emulsion. I was wondering if it was possibly some type of mold. Didn't know for sure. I was really hoping to avoid washing etc, but guess that's what I'll end up doing. Haven't done darkroom work in years. Glad to hear they still sell Photo-flo. Thanks.
