picked up this little gem yesterday - 04-02-2011, 03:18 PM

been wanting to supplement my medium format addiction (have been using a rollei), so did a bunch of research and found what i wanted. luckily houston camera exchange just got this in on thursday, so i went yesterday, gave it a look over and grabbed it. wonderful piece of equipment. shot some last night and this morning and dropped off 4 rolls at walmart today for processing. i think what i like most about it is how comfortable it feels to carry and shoot. the range finder takes some getting used to, but overall i'm really pleased with it.

Wow, very nice, Adam! All you need's a 150 and you've got the kit.

I've never used WalMart for processing MF. They send it out to Fuji labs, right? What's the turn-around time like?

Michael, yes, WM sends it off to a Fuji lab for processing. Turnaround time is about 2 weeks. They drop off/pick up Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. What I like best - for processing only it's just $2 per roll.

I have several rolls of Velvia in 120 I'd like to have developed, which Wal-Mart are you using? I see you're in Katy as well which is why I'm wondering.

Houston Camera Co-op had a Mamiya 6 yesterday. I had to keep myself away from the MF cabinet, the last thing I need is another camera!

Anthony, I use the one at Katy Mills. I just mark process only under the special instructions box.

Thanks, Adam. I'll pay them a visit tomorrow. How do they sleeve/return the strips, if you don't mind me asking?

Anthony, the 120 was cut into 2 frames per clear plastic sleeve. the 35 i just got back was put into the envelope unsleeved (they also made 4x6 prints which I asked them not to do - when i pointed this out to the cashier, she only charged me for the processing). when i scanned the 35 in, i didn't see any scratches on them though. so far, i've been happy with their 120 b&w processing. i'll find out in a couple of weeks how their 120 color turns out.

Thanks again! I'll bring them some stuff. AZ does great work, but they're quite pricey. If it's critical, and I need (want) it now, I'll still use them but for color rolls I just shoot for fun I'm looking for less expensive alternatives. I may even buy the chemistry to do it myself again.

One more time
Walmart/Fuji C-41 develop & sleeve only is $0.84/roll, 120 or 220m
. My last two rolls were dropped off March 23 and returned yesterday. $1M
.82 including tax.

E-6 is what I'm bringing. The North Fry location has never been helpful with anything. I usually forget to stop at the S. Grand Parkway location when I go get dog food at Petsmart. I'd entirely forgotten the Wal-Mart at Katy Mills even existed. My question wasn't so much the price, because it's bound to be less than AZ no matter how I slice it, but the location and the way the negatives/slides are returned.

I'm out of dog food, so for grins I'm going to see if I can find someone to drop this film with at the location on S. Grand Parkway. I'll report back on my findings.

It doesn't matter which WalMart is used for dropping off either E-6 or C-41 does it? Since it all goes out to Fuji anyway, right?

And I don't mean to hijack the thread, but Wayne, where did you get that quote about film grain from? Is it yours? I was really struck by its profundity. I googled it, and the only hits I got were your posts. :)

Mike, the quote was posted in film forum at nikon cafe.
Any walmart that has envelopes and a drop box for film. Speak to walmart folks at your own risk. Search a thread at RFF about .84 cent film and walmart.

Comforting to read. There were no humans in the vicinity of the film drop but there were envelopes so I used them. Time will tell.

Adam, post up when you have some photos to share from that Mamiya!
