Scanning Software - 04-20-2011, 01:00 PM

What are you guys (and gals) using for software?

I have a Minolta 5400 Elite II and the software does not run on Win7. I have been testing VueScan and SilverFast on it and on my CanoScan 8800F, but I usually seem to revert to the base software for the CanoScan, and leaving the Minolta on the shelf.

When I have time I try and decipher the settings on my scans, but I am not sure if they are improving or getting worse.

The CanoScan software is pretty decent and has worked well for positives, but I am stuck on the Minolta.

The only thing that makes me want to scream is the preference option to enable 48-bit color / 16-bit grayscale on the 8800F software, and the subsequent dropdowns to select those modes which are then followed by the message that no you can't do that. The hardware supports those bit depths, but the software does not. Then I remember how little I actually care about that, and resume 24/8-bit life.

Hahaha. I have tried that box nearly every time I use it after not using it for a while.

I could never get used to VueScan... The interface just seemed ...weird... to me. Maybe I just didn't spend enough time with it, but I could never figure out how to do much with it.

I used to use SilverFast a lot, and loved it.

I currently use "Image Scan! for Linux". It's pretty basic, but it works.

I use the software that came with my CanoScan 8800F. I bought this for the purpose of scanning in some of my father's slides from the 50s and 60s. Once I have the images scanned in, I open them with my preferred photo finishing software for adjustment.
