Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED - 05-12-2011, 09:36 AM

Does anyone have any opinions on these? I am looking for a negative scanner for all my old 35mm color and B&W negatives (tons of them). I will also continue to shoot some film from time to time. Paying for 4000dpi scanning during developing adds up fast, and even more for my old stuff. I would rather scan everything myself. I have seen some of these Nikons for sale used. They seemed to get very high reviews years ago. I do not need medium format capability. I want to keep it under $1K and these can be had for that. Do I need to worry about LEDs burning out or any other pitfalls of a used unit? Will I be okay with the stock Nikon software, or will I need vuescan or something else. My negatives have always been sleeved, so I am not majorly concerned about dealing with damaged negatives.

Thanks

They are fine. Repair by Nikon may or may not be possible. Some folks use Vuescan. Some use the Nikon software. Unless you wish to print murals, 4,000 DPI is extreme. 2400 DPI will get you decent 11x14 prints.

I get great quality 2400dpi scans on 6x6's on my Canoscan 8000f, cost me $15 at goodwill.
