1950's Era negatives...What to do? - 09-13-2011, 05:01 PM

My grandmother has a ton of the square 1950's and 1960s era nevgatives. 4x4 maybe? (based on the picture prints from the same times) Anyway I am planning on getting a CanoScan 9000f for my 35mm negatives to get them digitally archived. WHAT I would like to know is anyone knows if this scanner will scan the 1950's negatives? If not can anyone suggest what I can use to get them digitally archived?

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Measure the negatives carefully. If they measure 2 1/4" x 2 1/4", the most common size larger than 35mm, then you need a scanner that will handle medium format & 35mm negatives. The scanner web page should have those specs. available. If the negatives are smaller than 2 1/4" square, they are probably 127 film. I'm not sure if you can get 127 size film holders for today's scanners.
Epson makes several scanners that handle medium format & 35mm film.

I just checked the 9000F specs. It will scan 120/620 (medium format) film. So, if your grandmother's film is 2 1/4" wide, the scanner's film holder will work.

Awesome thanks for that info. I couldn't figure out what to look for in specs. I will have her measure them for me :)

Slightly less than 2 1/2" sounds like 2 1/4" to me. Yes, they should fit. However, scanner film holders usually hold a maximum of 3 negatives. You may have to cut them if the roll hasn't been cut already. I also suggest archical negative sleeves for long term protection. Scanning isn't as archival as some folks think it is.

The Canoscan 9000f will work just fine for you. I have it and love it. I agree about archival sleeves. I also recommend a gentle cleaning with PEC-12, if you are up for it.

Can you tell me where to get some of those? I have a ton of 35mm I need to archive as well.

Another yes for the CanoScan 9000F. I scan my grandfather's old negatives with no problems. My wife got mine on Amazon. Try there.

A real camera store? Call Arlington Camera or one of the other stores nearby.

It comes with the scanner, it says that these items are in the box: Film Guide Mount, Film Guide Strip, Film Guide Medium Format, Film Retainer Sheet Mid Format

Given that she said "archive," I'm pretty sure she was talking about archival sleeves, and not the included film scanning holders.
