The storage is only half the story...Check the write speed:

can you imagine an array of say ten 2tb sd cards in a slot no larger than a pci slot, or maybe the front of the machine where a cd rom would normally go? That is some serious storage density!

I think we will see 512 GB SD cards commercially available within 15 years. I figure the density doubles about every 2 or 3 years (Moore's Law). I have an 8 GB now, but 16 GB might be out there. 3 years would be 32, 6 years 64, 9 years 128, 12 years 256, 15 years 512 GB. 1 TB cards should become reasonably common in about 18 years, by this schedule, or in 12 years by the more optimistic schedule, so say about 15 years until we see 1 TB cards introduced.
