I didn't read everything above, but here's the Deal as I see it:

Everytime I look at my RRS BH-55 head on my Gitzo tripod I think, "You're insane! Do you know how much all of that cost? Do you know what you could have bought with that much cash? Well, do you?"

Then I pick up the gear and go use it. Like using it to hold up my 4x5 field camera on the way up, on top of and on the way down Enchanted Rock day before yesterday. It's worth it.
