Parts fell out of my 5dmk2! Check yours! - 06-01-2009, 10:38 AM

UPDATE:

Got the camera back today and it is working like new. Canon did the following:

-Replaced the part that fell out
-Replaced the lens pin contacts
-Replaced the plactic piece around the lens pin contacts
-Replaced the focusing screen
-Cleaned the sensor
-Updated the firmware

I was a bit frustrated that i had to argue with them a bit to get it fixed, but they have changed their records to make me the original owner since i am the one who registered the camera so i dont have any future problems. They also gave me a $100 voucher good towards any repair after the warranty runs out. All in all, I am happy with the outcome and am glad they did, in my opinion, the right thing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

here is the situation:

So i was shooting some photos and video yesterday with no problems. Came home and was going to take some pictures of some birds outside but when i looked through my viewfinder i noticed an obstruction. when i popped the lens off the little piece shown below was just hanging there and fell out when i touched it. There werent any screws that fell out when i removed the lens so this leaves me to believe they somehow made it into the body of the camera (a nightmare in itself). Im not sure if mine is just a freak accident but it couldnt hurt to make sure your screws are tight.

I did email Canon and have to admit i laughed a little when i read over their reply:

"Thank you for your inquiry. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you. We are sorry to hear that
pieces are falling out of your new EOS 5D Mark II."

I'll keep everyone updated about the repair, if Canon has any other comments, and how long this takes.

How it should look:

How it looks now:

The bottome of the lens mount where i think the screws may have done some damage. Looks like they may have been wedged in between the lens and body and did their damage when i removed the lens.

Photoshop? i sure hope you are joking. if it was photoshopped, how did i get a picture of the metal piece without it being cutoff where it goes under the rounded part of the lens mount? if youd like ill be happy to send you the full original picture with all of the exif data. unfortunately the camera is boxed up and will be off to canon tomorrow so i cant get another picture of it.

I am still trying to figure out what I am looking at here.. what the heck is that slot above the red dot?

I have my 5D2 out in front of me and for the life of me cannot figure out how your pic #2 could even get like that???

Maybe it's just too late... I am utterly confused or my eyes are playing tricks on me..

AndrewCCM added 2 Minutes and 30 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below

Ok.. so you have the mirror piece sitting on top of the camera mount to illustrate. Now I get it.. For a second, I was thinking, "a perfectly symmetrical hole appeared above the mount?????" LOL

i thought it was photoshopped at first also..

it looks like a slot, but it's the actual piece that fell off that was just placed on the camers.
