Raw Settings - 06-02-2009, 02:45 AM

Okay going with RAW + jpeg,,,,, whats the recommended setting on a Canon 40D? There are only 20 options available and I don't have a clue.

I don't shoot a lot of pics but like to play around with PP.

I only shoot RAW (the largest -- not small RAW), and convert only my better shots to JPEG using Adobe Lightroom, or Photoshop. Shooting RAW+JPEG will only consume more space on your memory card.

there's no benefit to shooting jpeg of any size if you're also shooting RAW unless you need an instant proof cd for a client. If it's for yourself and you're already shooting RAW then I'd suggest stop adding the additional jpeg. As mentioned the jpeg will just take up more space on your memory card. Just my opinion.

Only? Lol, sorry.

Yeah, like already stated, just shooting RAW is fine unless you for some reason need an instant proof. I occasionally shoot RAW+JPEG if I know I will need instant access to the pictures. But most of the time I just use RAW.

Suggested study of RAW.
Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS2

by Bruce Fraser

Don't worry about the CS2.

A short paper on RAW vs JPEG.

There is a period in the URL which takes you to the Photoshop comparison page. Here is the corrected link.

I think the key is that the "recommended" settings depend on what you are capturing and your taste/preferences. The Canon defaults are their recommendations for general use. With memory card prices and capacity these days space does not seem to be a limitation. As for studying more, try this link for going a little beyond the manual:

http://www.usa.canon.com/uploadedima...EOS_40D_WP.pdf

I believe that even if you shoot in Raw and don't save a JPEG, the settings do matter because they determine the processing for the image displayed on the camera LCD and what is embedded in the Raw file for a thumbnail preview.

Settings really don't matter for RAW and use the histogram to judge the capture not the LCD image.

Here is my workflow:

1 - Import pics form CF card into Lightroom
2 - Review pics hitting either X (to delete), or P (to keep)
3 - CTRL-Backspace to delete the ones I do not want to keep
4 - Touch up, crop, process the good ones, and export to JPEG
5 - Wait for the money to roll in (still waiting for this, BTW)

Why not export to TIFF for a better color gamut, particulary for printing?

I hardly ever print anything anymore (I don't actually sell my pics). Most of what I do is for the web.

Looks like you are stuck in JPEG and sRGB land.....

The print is photography's raison d'etre.
