What sand bag do you recommend? - 06-24-2009, 07:40 PM

Looking for something to weigh down a light stand that has a speedlight and an umbrella. Saw the Impact 5 lb sandbags on B&H. Anybody have a recommendation? I thought that once I remember seeing bags you fill with water instead of sand. That seem pretty convenient as long as they don't leak. Any opinions?

Well. I'm a little cheap and use one gallon plastic bags. I fill the bag about halfway and try and remove most of the air inside before sealing with duck tape. I then place another one gallon bag over that and seal it again with duck tape. You just have to replace the plastic bags because they do wear over time.

I have a seven pound weight that attaches to my light stand, but if there is more than a breeze, I use auger style tiedowns that screw into the ground and attach to the stand with bungee cords.

They aren't free, but I like Matthews bags. Play sand from Home Depot is cheap in 25# bags.

Yep - I was about to plunk $40 at the Co-Op for one. Then I went to Wal-Mart. One box for $14 has two 5lb ankle weights. They're the same as at the Co-Op, with the weighted rods that slip in and out. They arn't dainty either. I'm tired of the fleecing of photographers jeez.

I took gallon size baggies, filled them with sand I got at Lowes (hint - a broken bag may be marked down) and wrapped that in duct tape. I put two bags of this into the cheap give-away bags/"briefcases" I collected from conferences. These close with a clasp or zipper, and have handles/straps. If I ever have bright spray paint I may hit the bags with this to make them stand out. But for now it is just me and I watch my step around my gear. But it would make it more obvious to others I may be shooting.

Several manufactures make "empty" Sandbags that range in price from $10.oo (for 10lbs.) up to $30 (for 50lbs.) Play sand is cheap at home depot or even free if you know where to look. To me, it's worth about the same amount of money (or even a little slight more) to get the empty sandbags as it is to purchase ankle weights or barbells (ranging from $10 - $20). Even homemade gallon jugs and plastics bags (to me) aren't worth the hassle and time to continue making every 6 months when they break open or burst. Sandbags are heavyduty, well made and you don't have to worry about being gentle with them..... I say spend the same amount of money or again a couple of dollars more and get the real thing!

I agree with Mark. Even more so if you travel around with your gear.

Two 30# bags work well on my Matthews roller stand carrying the 7' Octobank!

I have a couple of these and they work fine and seem well made. I did the same thing by using gallon ziplock bags and play sand from HD to fill them, then put the ziplocks into the pouches.

Works Great and the price is right.

I was able to find these at a local camera shop in Garland so no shipping involved.
