Suggestions, which you can take with a grain of salt. What is your budget? What are you mostly shooting? For no holds barred, go for broke, price is no object:

14-24mm f/2.8 (stunning on my D2X, but that big front element out there is scary)
24-70mm f/2.8 (On my D700 90% of the time)
70-200mm f/2.8 VR (One of the best lenses made)

For a better, more modest approach:
12-24mm f/4 Nikkor a good, albeit under appreciated lens on a DX camera. This is a very good lens.
17-55mm f/2.8 -never used one, but many swear by it, the wide end is important.
80-200mm f/2.8- find an AF-S one if you can.
17-35mm- Big, bulky, expensive, but wonderful performance.
28-70mm- Awesome lens, but 28mm is just not wide enough on a DX camera. Used it for a number of years on my D2X, but it was just not wide enough.

Don't overlook the excellent 18-70mm kit lens, this is one stellar performer of a lens. This lens lived on my D70 and D80, and it was a "no regrets" lens. I shot so many photos of my kids, landscapes, etc with this lens.

Then there are the Tokina/Sigma/Tamron options, and I have no data on those. I have a quirk that I prefer to keep Nikon optics on my Nikon Cameras, that does not mean that these companies are not good, it is just I don't use them.

For Micro/Macro work
105mm f/2.8 VR Micro is razor sharp, just an incredible lens

The 85mm f/1.8 is a very good, sharp lens, own one of those myself. Don't overlook the 50mm f/1.4D version, sharp, sharp, sharp, a nice lens at a good price.

For funky wierd effects
10.5mm f/2.8 fisheye.

I currently have a 16-85mm on my D2X, and it is really a great lens, just wonderfully sharp, contrasty, almost 90+% of my 24-70mm lens that lives on the D700. The 16-85mm is an under appreciated gem of a lens, as good, if not better than the 18-70mm thanks to the VR, even though it is a stop slower.

LENSES TO AVOID:
80-400mm VR- Got one, and it is a love/hate, mostly hate with this lens.
